Today, the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the Global Future Councils began. Hosted by the Government of the UAE and the Dubai Future Foundations, this event brings together 30 Global Future Councils and over 500 experts across various disciplines, including the Future of Sustainable Tourism. 🏝 🐋 Coastal and marine tourism represents at least 50% of total global tourism – a $9.5 trillion revenue industry that generates every 1 in 11 jobs. It is also the largest economic sector for many Small Island Developing States (also known as Big Ocean States). A healthy ocean is the foundation of this global industry, and the future of travel and tourism can only be possible if it continues to thrive. We are happy to have the Ocean Action Agenda's Industries Lead Hanh Nguyen on the ground, highlighting the role of the ocean into this years core themes: 💡 Innovation for inclusive growth 🌏 Climate action, nature protection and the energy transition 🤝 Building trust for global collaboration Find out more about the event here: https://wef.ch/404zhbs More on the Future of Sustainable Tourism: https://lnkd.in/ggtApSxE Joseph M. Global leaders fast-tracking solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the ocean.
Info
Friends of Ocean Action is a unique, informal group of global ocean leaders from a range of sectors who are fast-tracking solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the ocean. Its members – the Friends – come from business, civil society, international organizations, science and technology. Hosted by the World Economic Forum's Ocean Action Agenda and working alongside the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, Friends of Ocean Action aims to drive meaningful action for ocean health. Our transformative, high-impact and scalable initiatives support the targets of the Sustainable Development Goal for the ocean, SDG14. Our work to advance a healthy, thriving ocean falls mainly into the following impact areas: blue food, climate resilience, innovation, and business and policy transformation. We also integrate critical cross-cutting priorities, from ocean equity and gender parity in the ocean space to advancing ocean action in China and reversing marine biodiversity loss. Our Co-Chairs are Ambassador Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, and HE Isabella Lövin, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden. I was delighted to contribute to the Blue Africa Summit in Tangier last week and join many decision-makers, experts and innovators from the region, learning from the wealth of initiatives and experiences shared. Some take-aways: 🌍 Africa’s #BlueEconomy holds immense potential to drive economic and sustainable growth across the continent, with the possibility of generating $300 billion and supporting around 50 million jobs. From maritime transport to coastal tourism to fisheries and aquaculture to offshore renewable energy, Africa’s fast growing maritime sectors can contribute to eradicate poverty, enhance food security, and accelerate climate action. 🐋 This economic growth depends on sustaining Africa’s marine ecosystems. The sustainable management of marine environments and the responsible growth of maritime sectors must be an imperative for the future of Africa's Blue Economy. 🌊 💲 #BlueFinance must be urgently scaled to meet #SDG14 and the #2030Agenda as a whole, to achieve sustainable and equitable blue economy for the continent. #MultilateralDevelopmentBanks, #Philanthropy and #ImpactInvestments & #OceanInnovation will play a growing role in closing the financing gap. Here is my message on this, with many thanks to La Saison Bleue https://lnkd.in/erNhFsgs ⭐ As I have been working with the Friends of Ocean Action community since its inception, I was very impressed by the event chaired by our new Friend Rym Benzina Bourguiba and I want to thank her and the other organizers for their leadership. And I was also proud to see many other Friends, including HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Peter Thomson, Pascal Lamy, Patricia Ricard, Tiago. Pitta e Cunha Richard Brisius to be such inspiring voices during these important discussions. 📢 Last but not at all least, the Summit was also anticipated by a Regional Dialogue Day intended to gather Africa's priorities and expectations for the Third UN Ocean Conference #UNOC3 to take place in Nice in June 2025. #OceanAction #BringItAllTogether Olivier Poivre d'Arvor Alfredo Giron Nava Geneviève Pons-Deladrière Ashok Adicéam Fedra Francocci Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco

🚨 [NEW] Discover the policy brief “Blue Thread: Aligning National Climate and Biodiversity Strategies” which explores the potential of ocean-based solutions to enhance synergies across the biodiversity and climate agendas! 🌊 🧵 This policy brief results from the work of the Ocean & Climate Platform and Blue Marine Foundation, supported by several partners: GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), NDC Partnership, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Ocean Conservancy, Ørsted, The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Rare, and the UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform. It: 👉 Demonstrates that, despite separate mandates, the Convention on Biological Diversity (UN Biodiversity) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (ONU Climat) can effectively collaborate and support alignment at the national level. 🌀 Explores how the Ocean Breakthroughs and the ocean-based solutions they provide can enhance policy coherence, efficiency, and impact across biodiversity and climate national strategies - also known as National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). ⚙️ Considers different levers and opportunities to accelerate and scale these solutions. 👉 Dive into the publication here: https://lnkd.in/eJYvNFQ7 #BlueThread #OceanForClimate #OceanForBiodiversity

This fall, three major COPs will converge: the CBD COP16, UNFCCC COP29, and UNCCD Desertification COP16. This alignment offers a unique chance to push for integrated action. 🌿 While nature is slowly becoming more central to climate discussions, much more needs to be done. We will not reach the goals of the Paris Agreement without halting and reversing nature loss. Therefore, it is critical to position the nature-positive transition alongside net-zero strategic pathways. 🌊 Overuse of the ocean and land not only drives biodiversity loss but can also accelerate carbon emissions. Meanwhile, greenhouse gas emissions are causing record temperature rises, degrading ecosystems, and weakening our planet's resilience. 💡 Businesses also depend on healthy ecosystems – $44 trillion of economic value is at risk from nature loss due to reliance on natural resources. This Agenda Blog by Nicole Schwab and Pedro Gomez explores how we can ensure that action on nature and climate is integrated: https://lnkd.in/e7tdewzR 1t.org Tropical Forest Alliance Alfredo Giron Nava Akanksha Khatri Anna-Maria Fyfe Hug Gemma Parkes Erin Skoczylas Yifan Zhang #Nature #Climate #COP16 #COP29 #SDGs #SDIM24
