Announcement
I am thrilled and honored to announce that I have taken on the prestigious role of the 23rd President of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI). This position carries great responsibility and offers a remarkable opportunity for impact, much like the philosophical journey of self-discovery and purpose championed by ancient Greek thinkers. ( Hi, after all being in Athens for a week – you start to try to think.-)
As I embark on this new chapter following the inspiring MIE 2024 in Athens, Greece, I am reminded of Aristotle’s belief that “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” My commitment to advancing our field is rooted in the collective efforts of incredible colleagues who embody this principle through their dedication and collaboration. Together, we will bridge the gap between research and practical application, harnessing the immense and transformative potential of medical informatics to transform healthcare.
The energy and enthusiasm of the EFMI family—through our National Societies, Working Groups, Institutional members, and yEFMI—will be pivotal as we navigate the future. I am particularly excited about the emergence of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), which represents a significant leap towards creating a secure, standardized environment for sharing health data across Europe. This initiative empowers individuals with control over their health data. It supports groundbreaking research and innovation in collaboration, echoing Plato’s assertion that “The beginning is the most important part of any quest.” It fits nicely into today’s belief in prevention.
As we look ahead, let us reflect on what our medical informatics knowledge can contribute to healthcare and perhaps the EHDS. Together, we can harness the power of informatics to transform healthcare, ensuring that our efforts are guided by the virtues of integrity and accountability that Aristotle emphasized as foundational to effective leadership. Let medical informatics become a habit for creating good things so that we can contribute more together.
I am deeply grateful for your trust and support. Let us shape the future of medical informatics together!
