The VIX reached a peak level of 65 on Monday at 2:30 PM CET (8:30 AM EST), outside regular US trading hours. This level was neither reliable nor tradable, as it was calculated using S&P 500 options quotes that were significantly wider than usual. These quotes implied a bid-ask spread on the VIX that reached 20 points that morning, compared to 0.5 points during regular trading hours. VIX futures, on the other hand, are a more reliable indicator. They peaked earlier that morning, overreacting by 12 points (on a delta-adjusted basis) vs Friday’s close. This suggests that the trigger for Monday’s volatility spike was actually the unwinding of the USD-JPY carry trade and the associated meltdown of Japanese equities. #Volatility #Investing #VIX

Pierre de Saab, Partner and Head of Alternative Investments shares some insights that struck him over the 2-days: 1️⃣ Inflation will remain elevated and fiscal policy will replace rates as the main input in economic models. 2️⃣ Corporate margins have become structurally higher now as companies tend to focus their operations on the “best projects” with the highest ROE and outsource the rest (Think Apple focusing on design in-house and outsourcing production). 3️⃣ Machine learning needs two elements to become sharper in their analysis than they are today: continued human input and pre-training with a lot of data to learn to work through the noise. 4️⃣ The case for multi-period portfolio optimization for stronger returns
