Measured in dollar terms, the crypto markets tonight experienced the largest liquidation cascade since the FTX collapse in 2022. Over a billion dollars in levered positions were taken out in less than 24 hours. Bitcoin went as low as 53'600 USD, prices last seen after the ETF approvals in January. Some altcoins, however, are back at their bear market lows from 2022. The initial sell-off was kicked off by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA) starting to liquidate part of its $3.5bn Bitcoin holdings they acquired through a seizure linked to the former operator of the film piracy website Movie2K in 2013. So far, the BKA has sold roughly half a billion dollars worth of Bitcoin. To add fuel to the fire, the long-insolvent crypto exchange Mt. Gox started sending large repayments in Bitcoin to former users a few hours ago. While the Trustee has not published any figures, we've been able to track $2.8bn worth of Bitcoin moving from their wallets. Since users haven't had access to their balances since 2014, it can be assumed that a large part of the repayments were swapped into US dollars. Mt. Gox still holds ~$7.6bn worth of Bitcoin. It is unclear when further repayments will be made. In the past, large liquidation cascades linked to external factors - the last of which was the collapse of FTX - have pushed prices further down than what the market would have valued them at otherwise. One of the Bitcoin ETF issuers, VanEck, has filed for the first Spot #Solana ETF in the US. Short term, we see this as more of a marketing stunt, as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has kept a very tight stance on altcoins including #SOL. Over the long run though, many more digital assets will become available to a broader audience through #ETFs and other vehicles. Having exposure to these up-and-coming assets now is a major advantage, as demonstrated by #Bitcoin's price action after the #ETF approval in January.

Another Cantonal Bank is entering the crypto business, and this time it's by far the largest one. With a balance sheet of $200bn, Zürcher Kantonalbank manages more money than the 3 next largest Cantonal Banks combined. It's still unclear what the timeline for an official rollout looks like, but we're expecting it to happen this year. And nine other Cantonal Banks have been running tests too.
