Inspired by nature. Driven by science.
Info
We are an interdisciplinary team of scientists studying ecosystems at a global scale to understand the relationships between biodiversity and climate change. Our work is helping create the scientific foundation for ecosystem restoration, informing and empowering people to protect and restore Earth’s biodiversity to fight climate change and improve human well-being. Our research is the foundation of the UN’s trillion tree campaign, and we serve as advisors to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the World Economic Forum’s 1T.org campaign. In 2021, we launched Restor, a non-profit organisation that connects people to scientific data and to each other in order to increase the impact, scale, and sustainability of restoration efforts. Restor was a finalist for the inaugural Earthshot Prize for the best solutions for the world’s greatest environmental problems.

🎉 We had an incredible event on July 15, hosting over 50 local scientists and artists for an exclusive event with the ETH BiodivX team. The highlight? The launch of the exhibition "Amazônia Mapeada - Images and Sounds of Environmental DNA" at Bosque da Ciência in Manaus. 🌿 From insightful presentations on Amazonian research to an immersive exhibition preview, it was a night to remember. The exhibition, featuring artistic photographs and environmental DNA sounds, is open to the public until August 14. 📸 Curious to learn more and see photos from the event? Head over to our website and read the full article! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dieSi_-g

Why does a forest consist of species with those specific leaf types and tree heights? Well, because of #biodiversity – the force which is causing unique global patterns of species richness, genetic variety and functional diversity. Biodiversity represents not just the amount of different species present, but for example, also the manifold #ecosystem functions that are fulfilled as species interact with each other. So, to assess ecosystem health and #resilience, we need to assess biodiversity holistically – with all its dimensions. And that is what Prof. Andrea Paz, Prof. Thomas W. Crowther, and Prof. Daniel Maynard have been doing. Read about their new #research here: https://lnkd.in/ewM4qqyw

#BeforeandAfter with Restor The Natural Mangrove Ecomuseum was founded by friends Rusty Sá Barreto and Ivam Oliveira in response to the dire state of the mangrove ecosystem. Recognizing the urgent need for action, they committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of mangroves. Since 2001, they have restored mangrove areas through hands-on field classes, planting initiatives, and cleaning efforts, supported by an educational nursery. Their journey has been challenging and, at times, solitary, but they drew inspiration from the mangrove forest itself—an emblem of strength, resilience, and persistence. As we celebrate Mangrove Month, we honour their remarkable work, which has earned recognition as a Historical-Cultural and Natural Heritage Site in Fortaleza, Brazil. “A fundamental principle of ecology is that nothing exists in isolation. Every species depends on other species to survive, to maintain the balance in our global system.” Thomas W. Crowther founder of Restor The vast, interconnected ecosystems are what inspire us every day. At Restor, we are determined to fight climate change and biodiversity loss. But none of this is possible without you. We invite you to join us and be #PartofthePlan and #PartoftheImpact. We are – literally – getting down & dirty at the #lab this week! 🌱 🥼 Master's students Maike Friedel, Alice Neves & Gülce Tekin are setting up a giant #experiment led by Dr. Camille Delavaux & Dr. Laura van Galen. The mission: creating mesocosms of various plants and ericoid #fungi combinations to study how their interactions impact plant productivity and may, later down the line, inform #wetland #restoration. What do you think, wouldn't you want to get your hands dirty for such a cool project, too? 😉

Greetings from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in #Panama! 👋 Our #PhD student Matilde Maria Bragadini just sent in some snapshots of her adventures on Barro Colorado Island, where she's taking a multitude of #soil samples together with former Master's student Daria Lipsky & lead #scientist Dr. Daisy Dent. 🌳 The samples from #forests of different ages will then be analysed to study how soil #microorganisms change across tropical forest succesion. 💡 Seems like Matilde's field stay has been loads of fun – we wish her continued joy and success! #ecology #sciencelab #fieldwork #womeninscience #GenerationRestoration Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS), ETH Zürich

Is there a way we can accelerate #climateaction? In an open letter by Tim Lenton, co-signed, among others, by lab members Alexa Firmenich and Thomas W. Crowther, there is a clear answer: yes. The key to speeding up #decarbonisation rates lies in identifying positive #tippingpoints through facilitating #feedbackloops that will then self-propel positive change as they grow in scale. In our society that could for example be the active support of a wide-spread take up of renewable energies. When it comes to #nature, it's even simpler: nature already has a myriad of self-amplifying feedback loops. The challenge here is rather to protect our natural #ecosystems so that the careful balance to keep them healthy and functioning is continuously maintained or restored. Getting started is hard, that is true – but if we dare, the rewards are immense. Read the full letter on the need for positive tipping points and alternative measures of #growth here: https://lnkd.in/edFZ39pJ World Economic Forum #biodiversity #GenerationRestoration
