CITES aims to ensure that international trade in a CITES-listed plant or animal species does not threaten the survival of the species in nature. 🌱🐾 Because the trade in wild animals and plants crosses borders between countries, the effort to regulate it requires international cooperation to safeguard certain species from over-exploitation. Secretary-General at Secretariat, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
A great honour to be invited by the AITBT’s President Françoise Van de Ven to give a keynote address on CITES listed tree species at the 2024 ATIBT Forum this week. Our work would not be possible without the collaboration of range States, importing Parties, the academic community, industry stakeholders, and partners such as the ATIBT . This multilateral collaboration is essential to successfully implementing CITES provisions and ensuring the sustainable management of tree species. By fostering collaboration, enhancing capacity, and ensuring adherence to legal and sustainable practices, we are paving the way for a future where the trade in forest products and tree species aligns with the government’s global goals for forests, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Was great to hear our CITES Plants Committee Chair Aurélie Flore Koumba Pambo speak about CITES and spend some time with the Belgian CITES MA head Miet Van Looy ! 📸 Paul Cuveillier ATIBT #CITES #ATIBT #treeconservation #trees

A great pleasure to open our celebratory #CITES event to mark 40 years of the EU implementing #CITES and,, 10 years (in 2025 ) since the EU officially became a Party to # CITES. These milestones reflect decades of commitment to protecting #wildlife and ensuring #sustainable #trade, but they also highlight the urgent need for continued action. EU engagement in CITES has led to stronger enforcement mechanisms and wildlife protection strategies, including the EU Wildlife Trade Regulations (WTR) and the EU Action Plan against Wildlife Trafficking, revised in 2022, curbing illegal wildlife trade, and promoting sustainable use of natural resources. The good news is: From dismantling illegal wildlife trade networks to advancing global partnerships, the EU’s updated Action Plan against Wildlife Trafficking is making real progress. Together with Member States, various stakeholders, and international partners, we are safeguarding biodiversity for future generations. A heartfelt thanks to our esteemed speakers who joined today’s EU CITES Anniversary Event in #Brussels, including Ivonne Higuero Susan C Gardner, Ph.D. and others. Our commemorative event comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which is taking place in 2025 and the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP20) of CITES in 2025. It is also an important public reminder of the importance of biodiversity in the run-up to #COP16Columbia (Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In fact it is timely to highlight the crucial linkages between CITES and COP16 as both are pivotal for making peace with nature. Let’s continue working together for a future where biodiversity thrives, and illegal wildlife trade is a thing of the past. #EUCITES40 #EUCITES10 #EUWildlifeActionPlan #Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/e-EVbPxQ

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! As we admire the beauty of the full moon this #MidAutumnFestival, let's also take a moment to appreciate one of nature’s most fascinating connections to the lunar cycle – #corals! 🪸✨ Many coral species synchronize their spawning events with the phases of the moon, especially the full moon 🌑🌕. This incredible phenomenon is a reminder of the deep ties between the moon and #LifeBelowWater. #DidYouKnow? Certain coral species are listed under CITES Appendix II, such as blue corals (Helioporidae spp.), stony corals (Scleractinia spp.) and fire corals (Milleporidae spp.). CITES aims to regulate and monitor the international trade of these corals, which are commonly used in the aquarium trade, jewelry, and ornamental decorations, to ensure that such trade is sustainable and does not threaten their survival in the wild.

The journey of CITES-MIKE Programme data doesn't end with collection and analysis. It informs global conservation decisions, made at meetings like the CITES Standing Committee and the Conference of the Parties (COP). 🌐 🤝 During these meetings CITES Parties use MIKE #data to shape policies and strategies to reduce illegal killings of elephant populations: Conference of the Parties | CITES 🐘 #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

CITES employs a three-pronged approach to tackling #wildlifecrime: law enforcement, the improvement of livelihoods and #demandreduction. 📉 This week, the first CITES training workshop for the African region on demand reduction strategies to combat illegal trade in CITES-listed species started in Lusaka, #Zambia. 🇿🇲 This is also the first ever regional event on demand reduction to combat illegal trade in wild animals and plants on the African continent. #WildlifeTradeTuesdays | African #rosewood (specifically, Pterocarpus erinaceus) faces multiple threats, including uncontrolled and illegal harvesting for high value #timber. 🪵🌳 Because P. erinaceus is listed in CITES Appendix II, international trade in the species is closely controlled to ensure that such trade is not detrimental to its survival in the wild.
