#OnThisDay thirty-five years ago, on 14 July 1989, beams circulated for the first time in the Large Electron–Positron collider (LEP). Three tunnel-boring machines started excavating the tunnel in February 1985 and the 27-kilometre ring – which houses the #LHC today – was completed three years later. Designed to study in detail the (then) recently discovered W and Z bosons, and to look for signs of the #HiggsBoson, LEP was a remarkable machine in many ways and was, at the time, the largest scientific instrument ever made.
