SRF - Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen reports on our "KIND" project, which we are implementing together with the Ostschweizer Kinderspital. In June, our collaborative team received the Health Forward Grant from the Universität St.Gallen (HSG) for this project investigating the influence of blood glucose levels on nerve vitality in children with type 1 diabetes. In this interview, Dr. Philipp Broser and Marc Robin Gruener tell us more about the aim of the collaboration. We conduct digital technology research to prevent and manage chronic physical and mental health conditions.
Info
The Centre for Digital Health Interventions (CDHI) is a joint initiative of the Institute for Implementation Science in Health Care at the University of Zurich, the Institute of Technology Management as well as the School of Medicine at the University of St.Gallen (HSG), the Department of Management, Technology and Economics at ETH Zurich, and the Future Health Technologies Programme at the Singapore-ETH Centre. Our interdisciplinary team of computer and social scientists partners with medical experts to design behavioural, scalable and self-improving digital health interventions (“digital pills”) that are effective and cost-efficient. We conduct digital biomarker and chatbot research and use wearable sensors, mobile applications, social media and other technologies for the prevention and management of chronic and mental illness. Our digital biomarker research explores novel applications at the intersection of medicine, artificial intelligence, and ubiquitous computing. Our chatbot research explores how conversational agents and voice assistants must be designed to improve adherence to health interventions and thus, to support health-promoting behaviour. We also initiated and participate in the on-going development of the award-winning open-source platform MobileCoach for digital health interventions and ecological momentary assessments. Our work is published in scientific outlets and as open-source software. Consistent with the Swiss Open Research Data initiative and provided there are no legal, ethical or copyright barriers, data from our (clinical) trials is published in open scientific databases for replication purposes and to allow the application of novel data analytical approaches by academia and industry in the future.

The last exciting guest lecture for this semester will take place in a week's time. We are very much looking forward to two extraordinary speakers: Paulina Boadiwaa Mensah, MD und Dr George Jojo Boateng. The two will present their latest findings on the highly relevant topic of voice-based clinical AI assistants. In this hands-on talk, they will cover the basics of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and then build a RAG system in the healthcare context - a clinical decision support tool - using diabetes mellitus as an example. The event can be attended both online and live at ETH Zürich: WEV F 109-111 We look forward to meeting you there! 😀
