Our Field Application Scientist, Kyle Smetherham, and Service Technician, Dominik Anders, recently installed a BactoSense at Waternet's pilot plant as part of the ToDrinQ EU project. This EU-funded initiative aims to revolutionise water systems and secure high-quality drinking water. By installing a BactoSense at Waternet’s pilot plant, they can monitor influent and effluent streams from two newly constructed slow sand filters. One filter contains coarse sand and the other fine sand. 🔍 Key Insights: 🔸The new sand filters offer a unique chance to study their microbial evolution and filtration effectiveness in real-time. 🔸Slow sand filters are exceptional at removing turbidity, pathogens, and organic contaminants, ensuring safe and sustainable drinking water. We're proud to collaborate with a leading water company in the Netherlands. They're using our BactoSense to collect valuable microbial data from a tried-and-true filtration method. 💧 As always, you can learn more about our BactoSense on our website: https://lnkd.in/edDaWwUB #waterinnovation #sustainablesolutions #safedrinkingwater #waterislife

Back in March, our former intern Valentin Rodriguez was supporting us in developing our automated flow cytometer. Nowadays, when he's not at EPFL, you can find him at For Equity, a non-profit organisation. This year, they’re constructing two water wells for southern Ethiopia’s underserved communities and seeking your support/partnership. For Equity has been an official Ethiopian civil organisation since 2022, with all volunteer members. In 4 years, they’ve built a school, medical center, and more. Their 2024 focus: bring clean water to a severely water-stressed region near the Kenya border. Consider supporting here https://lnkd.in/dNkBfZkK, or contact Valentin for more information. #nonprofitorganisation #waterscarity #waterstress #donatetoday

In an average year, up to 70% of the water in Saxon (a Swiss village) and its mountain communities emanates from high-altitude springs. To protect people who live in remote locations from contamination, urgent monitoring and manually cutting off the water supply take, not surprisingly, a large number of man-hours. BactoSense functions with a sustainable, hermetically sealed, and refillable cartridge system. “It’s always the same story,” says our Marketing Program Manager, Sara F.. “There is always a lack of resources to get qualified personnel into the places where they are needed. This is why our BactoSense, an online flow cytometer, is such a game-changer for microbiological analysis. It can be connected to a SCADA system or a GSM network via a small antenna. There’s also the benefit that BactoSense functions with a sustainable, hermetically-sealed, and refillable cartridge system, which not only allows you to run tests (depending on the sampling interval of 30 minutes up to 6 hours), so you don’t need to send anyone out to check it.” Read the full story below. 👇 ttps://https://lnkd.in/dnDy2nEY

Last month was the G7 summit, which failed to discuss one crucial topic: Big Agriculture. 🐮 Although estimates vary, peer-reviewed studies have found that the global food system is responsible for roughly one-third of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Animals raised for consumption generate 32% of the world’s methane emissions, and agriculture is the largest source of anthropogenic methane pollution. Methane is the second most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon, and it’s 80 to 90 times more potent than carbon in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. This is why many scientists believe that aggressively curbing humanity’s methane pollution would be the fastest way to slow planetary warming. And methane isn’t the only environmental problem associated with meat and dairy. Even though animal agriculture provides 17% of the world’s calories, it accounts for 80% of global agricultural land use and 41% of global agricultural water use, translating into an outsize impact on biodiversity. For instance, 78% of global ocean and freshwater eutrophication is caused by agriculture. Eutrophication is the pollution of waterways with nutrient-rich water. That's why water monitoring is becoming more crucial than ever! https://lnkd.in/dSS2hy-s #foodsystems #bigagriculture #g7summit #waterpollution
