🇺🇬 🌱Uganda is getting one step closer in the drafting process of it's National Agroecology Strategy (NAS)! ➡️During a two-day workshop facilitated by FAO in partnership with PELUM Uganda this week, leaders from farmer-led organizations, research, and government addressed comments from ministry leadership on Uganda’s draft National Agroecology Strategy. 💡The strategy seeks to support scaling up agroecology at national level through measures such as: farmer training, market development, repurposing subsidies, strengthened entrepreneurship among women and youth in agroecology. 🎯Among others, key goals are improved #food and #nutrition #security, better #rurallivelihoods, enhance #climateadaptation, #soilregeneration and improved #biodiversity. 🤝Since the beginning, the strategy is being drafted through a broad multi-stakeholder process including key food system actors. 𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀! 𝟭𝟬 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 County governments from the Central Region Economic Bloc (CEREB), comprising 10 Counties in Central Kenya, held a meeting to coordinate support for the upscaling of agroecology in the region. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹? Facilitating consumption of agroecological food products and facilitating producer-consumer linkage via a food traceability mechanism for agroecological products. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁? ✅ Support food security in one of the most populated regions of the country ✅ Reduce the burden on people’s health and public healthcare expenditure related to non-communicable diseases 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱? “We are in the process of establishing a master plan [for CEREB] and want agroecology to be at the centre for sustainable agriculture,” said Murang’a County Director of Agriculture, Value Chains, Policy, and Strategy, Daniel Gitahi". As Hans von Zinkernagel (Biovision Foundation), present at the meeting mentions in the TV feature story: developments within CEREB and at the national level in Kenya, where a National Agroecology Strategy is being finalized, “connects to other developments in the world related to the upscaling of agroecology”. 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 🌍 When a government enacts a law in favour of #agroecology, it sets a precedent that others are eager to follow. Last week, the Institute for Culture and Ecology (ICE Kenya), a Biovision partner, hosted a workshop that brought together county ministers and directors from the Central Economic Region Bloc (CEREB) of Kenya. Representatives from 8 counties gathered to learn about the policy journeys of Kiambu and Murang’a counties. Kiambu County has a draft agroecology policy and law, while Murang’a has adopted a law on agroecology and is actively implementing its own agroecology policy. County representatives expressed strong interest in agroecological practices to produce nutritious, safe foods free of harmful chemicals. Discussions also highlighted food traceability and the prevention of non-communicable diseases through healthy diets. 🌍Biovision advocates for women's rights and poverty reduction 💪 Biovision, along with other organizations, has made an official appeal to the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (#HLPF), urging #policymakers to better protect #women and #girls from #poverty. Our appeal calls for the dismantling of structural #discrimination, ensuring #genderequality, and more decisively combating poverty. 📢 As an advisory body to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (#Ecosoc), Biovision has co-signed this appeal. This status allows us to contribute to the work of the UN and share our perspectives. The HLPF takes place from the 8th to the 17th of July, 2024. This appeal is a crucial reminder for the forum to enforce the achievement of sustainable development goals and to strengthen the rights of women and girls worldwide.
