We welcomed a vibrant audience and an inspiring group of panelists who shared their journeys, challenges, and wisdom from both industry and academia. The University of Waterloo Mathematics4 (M4) Building has officially broken ground!   MTA attended the ceremony on campus earlier this week, to commemorate the beginning of this major project. M4, a 145,000 SF, highly innovative and sustainable building serving to enrich studies at the intersection of statistics, computer science, business, and mathematics. It will complement the existing academic facilities that make up the Faculty of Mathematics – the only post-secondary program singularly dedicated to the study of mathematics in North America.   MTA’s Brian Rudy, Damineh Pegah Dehnadfar,OAA, M.Arch, Chris Ertsenian, Janice Chan, Julio Fay, Machiko Brissenden, and Sarah Xiaoyi Ni warmed up with a hot chocolate topped with #UWaterlooMath pink marshmallows while listening to the addresses made by President Vivek Goel, Dean Mark Giesbrecht, and Director of Indigenous Relations, Melissa Ireland. Thank you to all coordinators for making the event a success.   “It's very exciting to see this project start construction! The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) Headquarters and Multi-Tenant Commercial Building has won a 2024 LOOP Design Awards in the Architecture: Offices category!   This project, MTA’s first completed mass timber building, is a highly sustainable, financially viable, and innovative new workplace for the leaders of the OSSTF — an organization that represents all education professionals in the secondary school system in Ontario. Joined by a central atrium, the building offers abundant outside views, light, openness, and numerous opportunities for spontaneous interactions between the OSSTF staff and tenants. Every design decision was led through the lens of OSSTF’s values, propelled by the vision of creating a facility made from a renewable resource that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere and is harvested from Canadian-owned industries under sustainable regulations. Limberlost Place, a building currently under construction at George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus in Toronto, has won a 2024 LOOP Design Awards in the Eco & Sustainable Concept category!   The aspirational design of this project, completed with Acton Ostry Architects Inc., has introduced mass timber into the Toronto lexicon of public buildings and will achieve sustainability targets well in advance of the city’s step plan to 2030 carbon reductions. The higher education facility’s exposed mass timber in a space where the assembly occupancies and the teaching spaces occupy the full verticality of the building, as well as the exceptionally efficient, prefabricated envelope system, make it unique. | La Journée sur la Colline 2024 | Le 29 octobre dernier se tenait La Journée sur la Colline, un événement important du CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council. Une journée sous le thème de la sensibilisation où trois panels de discussions ont relevés les aspects essentiels du développement durable, réunissant des chefs de file, des décideurs et des intervenants clés dans le domaine du bâtiment durable. Josée Lupien, présidente de Vertima, était sur place lors de l’événement pour l’animation du premier panel de discussion : « 2023-2024 : l’année au cours de laquelle l’adoption des politiques du bâtiment durable s’est accélérée », auquel Jamie Dabner d’Introba, Hugo Lafrance de Lemay et Martin Luymes de HRAI (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada) ont pris part. Lors de ce premier panel de discussion, les panélistes ont fait un bilan de l'année écoulée et ont analysé les défis de mise en œuvre auxquels l'industrie du bâtiment durable doit faire face. La discussion a mis en lumières les décalages entre les ambitions politiques et la réalité du marché, principalement en ce qui a trait aux capacités de la main-d'œuvre et au développement des compétences. De plus, Hugo Lafrance a souligné qu'il serait intéressant de bénéficier de subventions pour l'intégration de mesures passives au même titre que celles pour la performance énergétique. Les échanges et les engagements formulés au cours de cet événement contribueront de manière significative à l’avancement du programme canadien pour des constructions durables, tout en soutenant la résilience économique du pays à travers le développement durable et l’implication active de membres moteurs du changement. The building houses 746 students and supportive resident advisors, and also serves the wider campus with its first full dining hall. The session will focus on how newly designed and renovated laboratory spaces can promote teamwork, transparency, and inclusion, improve safety and workflow, and encourage shared expertise through modular solutions to create a #sustainable research and innovation community. Principal Nigel Tai will speak about the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex – the New Medical School at University of Toronto Scarborough.
