Offering Solutions To Achieve Our Climate Goals.

About us

Concrete That Matters: CarbonCure’s award-winning carbon removal technologies reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. Hundreds of concrete producers around the world use CarbonCure’s technologies to inject captured CO₂ into fresh concrete during manufacturing, where it reacts with cement to transform into a mineral that strengthens the concrete. The mineralized CO₂ is permanently locked away and will never be released back into the atmosphere, even if the concrete is later demolished. In turn, this process generates high-quality carbon credits that deliver immediate, scalable, high-impact climate benefits.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Breakthrough Energy Summit in London alongside Robert Niven. I have been reflecting on the underlying reasons for the unshakeable optimism that we will decarbonize the planet which has stuck with me since. The sheer breadth and depth of solutions on display were inspiring. CarbonCure Climate Strategies was among an impressive group of ‘innovators’ across the key decarbonization challenges, invited to showcase its contributions to solving the hard problem of decarbonizing the built environment. As Dr. Eric Toone, Breakthrough's Technical Lead stated quite clearly in his TED-talk style keynote on the energy transition (should be requisite viewing - linked in the comments): “There is no easy button to push here. It’s hard work, and it’s going to take a long time.” These are hard problems. But this was a room full of do-ers. And to hear Bill Gates acknowledge our efforts in his opening remarks, in front of an audience of 1,200 business leaders, heads of state, innovators and decision-makers, was a moment of immense pride for our team. His broader message for the summit was clear: it’s time to shift focus from pilot projects to real-world deployment, and we need to solve for the green premium. The global construction industry is making real strides in climate solutions, and the entire value chain was well represented at the summit (for the first time). But we need the continued support of corporate and government leaders to keep deploying innovative technologies, like CarbonCure’s. It’s no secret that the concrete industry operates on razor-thin margins, and cost is king in the bidding process. Today, carbon credits are a crucial tool to enable producers to adopt our technologies without sacrificing competitiveness. The problem of the green premium will continue to stand in the way of wide-scale adoption, and we need companies to continue to step up as leaders and invest in carbon credits as we drive towards unlocking scale. Many are weary of negative publicity from doing the right thing (which is beyond absurd) when really it is a win-win: companies can contribute towards their climate goals using high-quality credits, and together we can scale decarbonization technologies to drive down hard-to-abate emissions, in one of the world’s biggest industries. As Bill Gates said in his most recent GatesNotes: “Now we need to supercharge support and ramp up investments. With commitments and capital from governments and industry leaders, we can deploy these solutions, scale them, and drive down green premiums. Let’s make clean technologies affordable and keep innovation flowing towards an abundant, clean energy future.” If you’re looking to drive innovation through your climate strategy, and are struggling to figure out how to address emissions in the built environment, or are tired of the constant debate in this space and want to just ‘do the thing’ then let’s chat!

At the 2024 Breakthrough Energy Energy Summit in London last month, CarbonCure founder & CEO Robert Niven and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Managing Director and Partner Karan Mistry, PhD sat down with Manveen Rana from The Times and Sunday Times to discuss the opportunity for carbon utilization in concrete to permanently store captured CO2 and reduce the concrete industry's hard-to-abate emissions. Their conversation emphasized the urgent need to drive the scale of technologies like CarbonCure with creative solutions. This includes catalytic funds from buyers in the voluntary carbon market. In addition to greener concrete, our carbon utilization technologies generate high-quality carbon credits that deliver immediate, scalable climate benefits. And we share the proceeds from our carbon credit sales with concrete producers to incentivize their adoption of our solution and increased production of lower carbon concrete. • In a recent GatesNotes essay, #BillGates explains how manufacturing is one of the hardest sources of emissions to cut. But he notes that "the pace of progress has been incredible, and faster than what I hoped when I started Breakthrough Energy, especially in cement and steel, which each contribute around 10 percent of all global emissions." "CarbonCure has pioneered a way to inject waste carbon into fresh concrete, the end product cement is used for—making the second-most consumed material on earth much greener," Gates adds. "Their retrofits of existing facilities, deployed at over 800 locations worldwide, have prevented nearly half a million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere." Read Bill Gates' essay, "The Clean Industrial Revolution Has Arrived," in GatesNotes: https://lnkd.in/eU9jUarg Indeed, CarbonCure has proudly partnered with concrete producers operating in more than two dozen countries across the Global North and Global South. Our carbon mineralization solution puts CO₂ to work by injecting it into concrete, achieving both permanent CO₂ removals and emissions reductions. In addition to greener concrete, our award-winning technologies also generate high-quality carbon credits that deliver immediate, scalable climate benefits. "Pumping CO2 underground and having it mineralized in underground rock formations, that’s very effective, but it can be very expensive. But there are now methods to use CO2 in the concrete making process." • It's not every day that Bill Gates praises your work. So our team was thrilled and quite flattered to hear his praise for CarbonCure during the opening plenary of the 2024 Breakthrough Energy Summit in London. Gates' remarks about CarbonCure reflected similar sentiments in his latest GatesNotes essay, declaring that "the Clean Industrial Revolution has arrived." In his GatesNotes piece, Gates spells out how manufacturing is one of the hardest sources of emissions to cut. But he adds that "the pace of progress has been incredible, and faster than what I hoped when I started Breakthrough, especially in cement and steel, which each contribute around 10 percent of all global emissions." "CarbonCure has pioneered a way to inject waste carbon into fresh concrete, the end product cement is used for—making the second-most consumed material on earth much greener," Gates explains. "Their retrofits of existing facilities, deployed at over 800 locations worldwide, have prevented nearly half a million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere." Indeed, just this week, we are celebrating - along with our concrete producer partners across two dozen countries - a total of 450,000 metric tons of carbon savings across 7 million truckloads of lower carbon concrete. And we're just getting started! We’re excited to announce that we’re bringing 320,000 tons of yearly CO2 removal capacity to Northwest Louisiana with two new DAC facilities! Located at the Port of Caddo-Bossier near Shreveport, the first 17,000 ton facility will come online in 2026. A separate facility will be built in the same location, with 100,000 tons of capacity to come online in 2027, and an additional 200,000 tons of capacity to come in subsequent years. This larger facility is Heirloom’s portion of Project Cypress, part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supported DAC Hub program. Here’s why this matters: 🏗️ Scaling Heirloom’s DAC solution: This is a major scale up from the 1,000 ton facility that we opened late last year as America’s first commercial DAC facility. 👷 Growing a new energy economy: Combined, these two DAC facilities will create over 1,000 jobs in Northwest Louisiana, helping to advance a new energy economy in the state and further establish America as a DAC leader. 💰 Expanding the economic impact of Project Cypress: With Heirloom’s Project Cypress facility in Northwest Louisiana and Climeworks' Project Cypress facility in Southwest Louisiana, we’re expanding statewide the economic impact and job creation potential of this DOE program. 🌎 Leveraging public investments to expand DAC: We’re leveraging the workforce and infrastructure investments that are making Project Cypress happen to add CO2 removal capacity with a privately-funded 17,000 ton DAC facility. This shows how government support can spur private investment in the CDR space and service more customer demand for high quality carbon removals.
