Sepsis is a major global healthcare challenge.[1] Recent scientific developments provide rationale for hemoadsorption in patients with sepsis.[2] Adsorption is a process by which molecules are removed from the blood by binding to a membrane or other adsorbing substances.[3] Hemoadsorption (formerly referred to as hemoperfusion) is the passage of blood through a sorbent-containing cartridge or a hemofilter for selective or broad-spectrum solute removal via direct contact of the blood with the sorbent material or the filter membrane surface.[4] Understanding of hemoadsorption provided by the 30th ADQI consensus conference is intended to guide the practice and research in the field.[2] Studies of endotoxin-based hemoadsorption have identified possible target phenotypes for larger RCTs.[2] As your partner, Baxter is committed to identifying sepsis and innovating for improved sepsis management.
