Climate action and gender equality are among today’s most pressing issues. The dire consequences of climate change disproportionately affect women worldwide, from drought-stricken fields to homes disrupted by severe weather events. Our latest IFC study, "Gender-Responsive Climate Governance and the Role of Women Leaders," tackles these issues head-on, aiming to empower the private sector in emerging markets and developing economies with effective, gender-inclusive climate strategies. What the research says is that women business leaders tend to approach environmental, social, and governance issues differently from men, typically prioritizing sustainability. The IFC - International Finance Corporation and the European Union have teamed up with the Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC to scale up green finance, supporting Sri Lanka's efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy and encouraging #sustainable investments in the nation. The #agreement, which falls under the EU's regional project "Accelerating Climate Smart and Inclusive Infrastructure in South Asia," was announced by IFC on Tuesday. It will assist CBC in laying the groundwork for a net zero transition. By extending into sectors like blue finance and green SMEs, CBC hopes to increase the size of its green #financing portfolio with the technical assistance of IFC. “The formulation of a robust climate transition strategy stands as a pivotal component within Commercial Bank’s strategic roadmap, “We are delighted to engage the expert advisory services of IFC to effectively realize this critical initiative. As a leading advocate of sustainable #banking practices, our primary objective is to expand our green portfolio while simultaneously advancing our journey towards achieving net zero emissions,” said Sanath Manatunge, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank. It is known that one of the nations most impacted by extreme weather events is Sri Lanka. The World Bank estimates that by 2050, climate change will cause the nation's #GDP to decline by 1.2 percent annually. With pledges to cut #greenhouse gas emissions and increase the use of renewable energy sources to generate power, addressing the dangers associated with climate change is a national priority for Sri Lanka. It is acknowledged that IFC has contributed significantly to the development of sustainable and green finance in the nation over the years, helping to create the first national green finance taxonomy and fostering an atmosphere that encourages investments that are #climate resilient.
