While aircanada pilots negotiated a 42% increase in pay over 4 yrs appears comparable to what pilots in the United States have obtained, a salary gap remains. New Air Canada pilots now earn CA $87.48 (US $63) per hour, compared to US $91 at United, US $116.05 at American Airlines , US $125.52 at Delta Air Lines and a Southwest Airlines first officer earns the equivalent of approximately US $133 per hour. The first-year Air Canada pilot annual pay comes out to CA $78,732 (US $57,071),compared to US $70k to US $100k earned by new pilots at major airlines in the USA. The gap is similar on the higher end of the pay scale as well. A Boeing 787 pilot at Air Canada with 12 years or more earns CA $389.96 (US $283) per hour or approximately CA $350,964 (US $254,405) annually. American Airlines 787 pilots with the same amount of company seniority earn base salaries of US $447.24 per hour, or over US $400,000 per year. New Air Canada pilots are also subject to a 2 year (was 4 years) fixed pay scheme referred to as flat pay. Unlike their US counterparts, Air Canada pilots have a pension plan. New pilots participate in a defined contribution plan, with benefits depending on market growth. However, more senior pilots are grandfathered into a defined benefit pension, which offers a fixed annual payout after retirement. The new contract puts Air Canada 787 captains eclipsing the top pay for a WestJet 787 senior captain.

The 14th Air Navigation Conference in Montreal recently brought together global aviation leaders to focus on Performance Improvement Driving Sustainability. The aim of the Conference was to reach a global consensus on performance improvement initiatives that will best allow International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Member States and industry to address aviation’s global environmental challenges and the rapid evolution in aviation operations and technologies. The Conference saw strong collaboration, with many recommendations moving forward for tangible outcomes. The Australian delegation played a key role, with CASA’s Joe Rule co-authoring one paper, co-sponsoring nine others, and preparing briefings for over 200 working papers. ‘Our paper on flight safety and wildlife hazard risk management was well received and will be further explored by expert groups,’ Joe shared. ‘It was noted that there are opportunities for the reduction of bird and other wildlife strike hazards by applying new methodologies and technologies. ‘A lot of the recommendations will be referred to the Technical Panels and Working Groups for actioning, with many CASA technical experts participating in these panels.' ‘Most recommendations arising against the agenda items have been referred to existing expert groups for actioning, rather than requiring the establishment of new groups (one-off groups in some cases), which was a good outcome from previous practices at past conferences. More challenges for Canadian Aviation. The Canadian dollar continues to drop meaning it is more expensive to lease aircraft, buy parts and supplies. Most aviation components and spares are in USD … the slide of the CAD means airlines will have to pay more. Southern heat seekers this winter will also probably slow their bookings; vacations out of Canada will cost more.

How will Bombardier’s Global 8000 transform business aviation? Bombardier has officially started manufacturing major structural components for the first Global 8000 production aircraft, slated to enter service in the second half of 2025. It’s hard to over-emphasize how important it is to avoid “negative training” in any type of operative scenario. This is critical in aviation, where an incorrectly trained response to a malfunction can have catastrophic consequences, but I would argue that it is equally true in almost any business environment. If your staff have been given instructions to respond to costumers in a specific way, you better make sure that this response is continuously updated and refined as the reality of the business changes. If not you might suddenly find yourself in a world of hurt without really understanding why. Equally important, is the value of a comprehensive briefing BEFORE your team goes into a highly dynamic meeting or situation. Have you gamed out possible scenarios? Does everyone know how to react if things get heated? Who does what? In this video, the immediate impact of these factors becomes painfully clear and I hope it teaches a valuable lesson to everyone👇
