We’re excited to share the release of our new report, “Building Climate-Resilient Seed Systems in Canada,” that celebrates the diversity of organic and ecological seed across Canada, and the farmers and seed growers who make it all possible. From 2021 to 2023, SeedChange / Sème l’avenir’s Canadian field program, The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security, established 24 seed demonstration sites nationwide, a project funded in part by the Government of Canada through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. These sites showcased and evaluated varieties of vegetables and field crops being preserved, adapted, and bred by organic and ecological farmers across the country. This report is the culmination of this project, and compiles three years of farmer stories, agronomic data, and agricultural policy. It encapsulates so much of what The Bauta Initiative has been doing over the past decade, and celebrates the farmers and seed growers who have been leading this invaluable work. What you’ll find in this report: - An exploration of the current challenges faced by farmers in Canada, especially in light of climate change; - The crucial role of seed in building climate resilience in Canadian agriculture; - Numerous regionally-produced, adapted, and bred seed varieties, each with its unique story; and - Remarkable successes of farmer-led crop adaptation, plant breeding, and participatory plant breeding supported through the program.
