The recent federal court decision regarding fishing licenses issued to the Mi’kmaq Coalition (that bought Clearwater) serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusive dialogue between Indigenous Nations and the Crown. This decision found fault with Canada for not consulting with the Inuit of Nunavut/NTI/QIA, highlighting the need for foresight and collaboration in such matters. As more Indigenous Nations engage in major projects, it is also important to extend “Nation-to-Nation” dialogue beyond government interactions to include meaningful engagement with our neighbouring Nations. Alberta’s government is updating the LAEA and MGA to make local elections processes more transparent and local elected officials more accountable to the people they represent. Albertans expect free and fair elections and that’s why it’s important we strengthen the rules that govern municipal elections. Albertans also expect their municipal councillors to be focused on the work that their constituents elected them to do, including addressing housing concerns, and the amendments proposed will help ensure that municipally elected officials are taking up that work. We need to make sure we get this right, which is why we will be reaching out to municipalities to hear their perspectives and gather their feedback to help us develop the necessary regulations.

What are you doing to do to stay cool?! We are in for a very hot stretch of weather this week across parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many areas of the Island are going to see highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s through Wednesday and possibly Friday. Indoor spaces that aren't air conditioned are going to become quite uncomfortable as the hot stretch of weather gets established due to overnight lows only being near 20º. Ensuring Albertans have access to reliable and affordable energy is a top priority for Alberta’s government. Alberta’s Winter Rules for utilities protect vulnerable Albertans by helping keep their lights on and homes warm during the cold winter months. Alberta’s government is working tirelessly to lower utility bills and protect ratepayers, ensuring Albertans keep more of their hard-earned dollars in their bank accounts. With more still yet to come, Alberta’s government has already taken action to lower utility bills by introducing new legislation and regulations to prevent power price spikes and stabilize local access fees, in addition to investing in programs that help municipalities and rural Albertans manage and lower their energy costs.

Undertaking deliberate acts of economic reconciliation, upholding and respecting Treaty Rights, making necessary investments in First Nations housing and infrastructure and creating more long-term, predictable funding opportunities for First Nations are measurable, tangible actions for all orders of government to take that will move reconciliation forward, beyond Sept. 30.
