Zan Times is an independent, non-profit news organization on a mission to empower women journalists in Afghanistan.

About us

Zan Times is a women-led, investigative newsroom that covers human rights violations in Afghanistan with a focus on women, the LGBTQ community, and environmental issues. We are a group of mainly women journalists working both inside and outside Afghanistan to tell stories of marginalized populations who rarely have a voice to shape and inform public discourse. Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, women and other marginalized groups have faced systematic repression, violence, and the complete erasure of their social and political rights. Zan Times was born out of this moment of desperation, of anger, of us trying to speak our truth in the face of injustice, and brute violence suppressing us for who we are. Zan Times was born out of the need to reclaim our autonomy and self-determination, to seek ways to shape and define the future we want to live in and fight for equality and freedom for all. At Zan Times, we believe that change begins with awareness. Therefore, our vision is to build an independent, accountable, and professional newsroom for raising awareness and sharing analysis about the lives of disadvantaged groups in Afghanistan. As many of us worked as journalists in Afghanistan, we are aware of the challenges, dangers, and opportunities of working in the media landscape and are doing our part in making sure the stories of the country are told. To that end, we are building on what Zan Times created in 2022 when we produced more than 60 reports and 200 daily news articles in Dari-Farsi and English. In 2023, we are focusing on producing in-depth and investigative reports on the lives of the most marginalized, while also supporting our team by building its capacity. At Zan Times, we know it is the time for women and the time to ensure their voices are heard.

The Taliban do not believe in law in the modern sense and declare that their law is sharia. In the Taliban emirate, sharia is the decrees of Mullah Hibatullah, which are issued without investigation, consultation, or a needs assessment, and everyone is obligated to obey them without question. -Imagine a country where everything — everything — about how your life unfolds depends on your gender. If you’re a girl, you’re banned from all education once you finish the sixth grade. As an adult woman, you are banned from many jobs — you and your children may go hungry as a result. You cannot leave the house without a male family member chaperoning you. -Governments should seriously consider including gender apartheid as a crime in the proposed crimes against humanity treaty. They should also bring a case against the Taliban for failing to abide by the UN convention on women’s rights before the International Court of Justice. Read more: https://lnkd.in/exYmVq8S

Antama lived for 68 years. She is a clear example of a 68-year-old woman’s life in Afghanistan. In 68 years, a woman with 11 children, and 50 grandchildren cannot even secure a piece of her own land. A woman with that many children, as her daughter said, dies alone in a hospital; a woman with six daughters and many granddaughters who haven’t heard enough of her stories.. Here, you will read the story of an Afghan refugee mother in Iran, whose young daughter's foot is run over by a car driven by an Iranian woman. People gather at the scene of the accident, and the reactions of both the crowd and the Iranian woman towards the injured refugee are heartbreaking. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eJbeFZNM

Asieh* is one of thousands of civilians who were severely injured and left disabled as a result of combat between Taliban fighters and the previous government’s security forces. Sixteen years ago, she lost her right eye when a mortar shell hit her home in the Sangin district of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. Six years later, Asieh’s house was shelled again. That time, she lost her right hand and leg. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g_E_YByn

The experience of the last three years of Taliban governance amply shows that the trajectory of the people of the country is grim. The prolongation of the Taliban rule is going to intensify the cultural, economic, and social destruction of the country and intensify the misery of its people. The worst nightmare of the people of Afghanistan is for them to be subjected to a prolonged Taliban tyranny, which means that the country and its population will become less educated, more backward, poorer, and austere, and a prison for women. Masoud Pezeshkian became the ninth president of Iran at a time when the country was in the midst of one of the worst waves of anti-refugee and anti-Afghan sentiment. Afghans in Iran face many problems and restrictions. Except for rare cases, the Afghans born in Iran cannot get an Iranian birth certificate and, as a result, they are deprived of fundamental rights such as buying land or houses and participating in political processes, even not having the automatic right to domestic travel. Moreover, they face serious problems in getting a SIM card, bank account, driver’s license, health insurance, children’s education, and residence permit renewal. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eszAnE2k

This is unlike any other pieces I have written for Zan Times. I have been thinking about what I should tell you, our valued reader on the occasion of Zan Times’ second anniversary. Then, I thought, nothing is more powerful than an honest reflection. So, here you go! Zan Times is a labour of love and passion by those of us who felt the weight of responsibility on our shoulders and needed to do something to ease our own pain and suffering.
