  • Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, a day which is dedicated to celebrating the cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples globally and raising awareness of the needs of these population groups year-round. Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world, numbering at least 370-500 million, representing the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. York Region is home to approximately 6,000 Indigenous Peoples and is located on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Peoples including the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat and Métis Peoples and the treaty territories of the Haudenosaunee, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Williams Treaties First Nations. Today this area is home to many diverse Indigenous Peoples, and we recognize their history, spirituality, culture and stewardship of this land. We also acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our closest First Nation community. The theme of this year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is Protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact. Approximately 200 groups of Indigenous Peoples currently live in voluntary isolation and initial contact. They reside in remote forests rich in natural resources in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Peru and Venezuela, choosing to live detached from the rest of the world. These peoples have a strict dependency on their ecological environment and any changes to their natural habitat can harm both the survival of individual members and the group as a whole. #YorkRegion is committed to creating a welcoming and #inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates all dimensions of #diversity. • Today, on #EmancipationDay, we commemorate the abolition of slavery and remember those stolen from their homes in Africa and enslaved in the Americas. This day also celebrates the resiliency and perseverance of Black communities in Canada and honours those who helped to abolish slavery. On March 24, 2021, the House of Commons voted unanimously to officially designate August 1 Emancipation Day. This is a time to reflect, engage and learn more about the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination. We can all play a role in helping to fight anti-Black racism and advocate for greater equity in our communities. #YorkRegion is committed to creating a welcoming and #inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates all dimensions of #diversity.
