About us

The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe. One of 17 Secwepemc nations forming Secwepemculecw, the greater stewardship land area extends from Shuswap Lake in the south, to Quesnel Lake in the north, and from Columbia-Kootenay Range in the east, to the Alexis Creek area in the west. Since time immemorial, our Kukpi7s (Chiefs) led a strong people, and they do so today. Today we have 786 band members and our population is growing. 233 members currently live on reserve, 511 live off reserve and 42 live on another reserve. Our band members include teachers, lawyers, social workers, artists, loggers, ranchers, and entrepreneurs. We honour our Elders and treasure our children. Our families are deeply important to us. We value our past and look towards our future.

  • Kukwstsétsemc, thank you BC Housing for this feature on the Sugarcane House net-zero duplex! Equipped with solar panels, high-efficiency heat-pumps, and thoughtful eco-minded engineering, the home is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes under normal living conditions. The duplex is now home to an Elder and single mom with child, with affordable rent and drastically reduced utility costs due to the net-zero design. Thank you to Zirnhelt Timber Frames Ltd., CHBA Net Zero, and all the collaborators for this fantastic initiative! https://lnkd.in/gwdnqSuy

  • Congrats to this guy, WLFN Chief Willie Sellars, being honoured as a recipient of the 2023 British Columbia Reconciliation Award! Chief Sellars was presented the award in Victoria last night from the BC Achievement Foundation. We couldn't agree with the words of the presenter more: "Chief Willie Sellars’ leadership embodies a resolute approach to reconciliation. From the Williams Lake First Nation of the Secwépemc Nation, his decade-long council tenure and current second term as Chief since 2018 reflect dedication to healing historical wounds. His impactful negotiation of economic agreements and oversight of multi-million-dollar projects displays transformative governance. Actively participating in St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School Investigation, Chief Sellars is committed to revitalizing culture and language, evident in the nation’s substantial investments. His wholistic dedication to community well-being extends to authoring children’s books, hosting cultural events, sports, and promoting unity and mutual respect among all Canadians." Congrats, Kukwpi7 Willie Sellars

  • More WLFN Member love coming at ya! For this week, William Magnus Lulua! William is a busy guy. Specializing in Men’s Fancy, he has been Pow Wow dancing since he first learned to walk. As an actor, he played a lead role in the award winning 2021 film Portraits From A Fire. On top of that, he has committed himself to learning conversational Secwépemctsín as well as Tsilhqot'in. William explains what motivates his quest to learn new languages: “I want to talk to my grandpa in the language that he knows, and actually have a nice conversation. Or, I’d like to have a conversation with an Elder, even if it’s just ‘hi, how are you?’” In his downtime, William enjoys playing music, getting outside, cooking, and playing with his dog. He spends a lot of time snowboarding, fishing, and hiking. He sends a shout-out to his family for supporting him and pushing him to be the best he can be. You can spot William from a mile away at the Pow Wow, sporting his brightly coloured regalia. https://lnkd.in/gcvvSQx7

  • This week's WLFN Member shout-out goes to Michaela Gilbert and her amazing artwork! 🤩🤩🤩 Embarking on her artistic journey from a young age, Michaela Gilbert was introduced to the world of art through her mother. Creativity has always been an integral part of her life, pushing her to transcend the boarders of language and embrace a contemporary style that’s both vibrant and narrative. At the core of her artistic identity lies a steadfast commitment to holding space for indigenous worldviews. Reflecting on her artistic journey, she shares, “My current body of work draws inspiration from contemporary Indigenous identities, while also seeking to preserve the essence of traditional stories.” This endeavour contributes to a broader narrative of cultural reclamation and redefinition.
