We're finishing a week of satellite-supported exploration back in the Amazon rainforest. 🌲🌲 In 2018, our reliable L-band services supported three female explorers - Laura Bingham, Pip Stewart and Ness Knight - to set a new world record as the first team to canoe the length of the Essequibo River in Guyana. Throughout the 10-week expedition, the team relied on our satellite fleet to keep them connected — and safe. By providing connectivity in the most remote regions, we're proud to help intrepid travellers complete their missions and inspire people all over the world. From the mountaintops to the depths of the rainforest, we are celebrating the role our satellites have played in supporting explorers around the globe. 🌎🌳🛰️ One notable example is British Explorer Ed Stafford, who used our L-band satellite fleet during his 2020 expedition and TV filming in the Amazon rainforest. Using our satellite phones, the team was able to access email, SMS, and GPS capabilities to stay connected with support teams from anywhere on the mountain. Importantly, being engineered to withstand the most extreme weather conditions gave them peace of mind, and they could stay in contact in an emergency. Space Norway’s ASBM satellites have successfully arrived in highly elliptical orbit (HEO) and the solar arrays and reflectors are now fully deployed. 🛰️❄️ The two satellites were deployed from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 160km altitude on August 11, 2024 and have spent the last 10 days using their own engines to rise to HEO orbit at 44,000 km over the northern hemisphere and 8,000 km over the southern hemisphere. People often ask us, “So, what’s it like to launch a satellite?” Kinda similar to sending your child off on their first day of school. After years of investment in development, training, and testing (Note: Please do not subject your children to thermal vacuum testing), you eventually have to release them into the world. You know they have the potential to be something great and to do extraordinary things — like providing broadband to the Arctic. So that’s what we did.
