Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation both land on September 30. While they share the same date, they serve a similar purpose—honouring those impacted by residential schools and raising awareness of that legacy. Read what Jeanette (Jen) Turner, Vancity’s Community Investment Associate of Indigenous Partnerships, has to share about how to honour the day and Reconciliation actions you can take all year round. https://lnkd.in/gr_v2i7h #EveryChildMatters

Below the text, there is a photo of a Jen Turner of Vancity with long dark hair, wearing a black sweater, resting her chin on her hand with a slight smile. To the right of her image, black text reads, 'With words from Vancity’s Community Investment Associate of Indigenous Partnerships, Jen Turner.' Below the text, there is a large black arrow pointing to the right.
    • An orange background with white bold text at the top reading, 'Read the TRC & UNDRIP reports.' Below, black text explains, 'The TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) Calls to Action report is a comprehensive set of 94 recommendations aimed at addressing the lasting impacts of residential schools and advancing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is an international document that outlines the rights of Indigenous peoples worldwide, including rights to culture, identity, language, and land.'
At the bottom of the image is a photo of a woman with long dark hair (Jen Turner of Vancity) wearing a black and multicolored jacket, looking down and smiling. To her right, there is a black box with white text in quotation marks, 'It’s shocking to me that this needs to be written but when we are under the apartheid of the Indian Act, then you know that it's necessary. So, please read the

Below, black text explains, 'There is an estimated 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children that attended residential schools. And it's estimated that 6000 children died in these schools and that number will go up with the unmarked graves that are being found at the school sites. Explore programs in your local communities or you can follow organizations like Orange Shirt Society and Reconciliation Canada on social media.'
At the bottom, there is a black box with a quote in white text: 'Children as young as four years old to 16 years old attended residential school. My grandson Aries is 3 years old and he's just a baby. I cannot imagine sending him off to school next year and never seeing him again. That is hard to imagine but the reality of 6000 families.'

    • An orange background with large bold white text at the top reading, 'Watch, read, listen and learn.' Below, black text explains, 'Watching, reading, and listening to Indigenous stories is a vital step towards meaningful Reconciliation. Storytelling has always been central to Indigenous cultures, serving as a powerful means of preserving history, passing down knowledge, and fostering community connections.'

The novel centres on Saul Indian Horse, a First Nations boy who survives the residential school system and becomes a talented ice hockey player, only for his past traumas to resurface in his adulthood.
    • An orange background with bold white text at the top reading, 'Wear your orange shirt.' Below, black text explains, 'Orange Shirt Day, held annually on September 30th, was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose bright orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school, symbolizing the stripping away of culture, identity, and dignity. Wearing an orange shirt shows solidarity with survivors and their families, honors those who never made it home, and acknowledges the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma.'

On the left is a man with short white hair (Wellington Holbrook of Vancity), wearing an orange shirt, and on the right is a woman with long dark hair (Jen Turner of Vancity), also wearing an orange shirt. Pigeon Park Savings is more than just a credit union. “For many, it's the last option in banking,” says Jill Henderson, a financial services representative and mental health worker. A collaboration between Vancity and PHS Community Services Society, Pigeon Park provides basic financial services—like bank accounts and cheque cashing—to nearly 7,000 low-income members in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. With few alternatives, most people rely on costly cheque-cashing services. Everyone deserves access to essential financial services, and Pigeon Park Savings shows what’s possible when finance puts people before profit. As a community credit union, Vancity partners with local organizations to solve real-life challenges.

Community celebration: we're marking the 20th anniversary of Pigeon Park Savings with a get-together at the branch on Wednesday (September 25). Join us at 346 East Hastings St. to celebrate two decades of the Downtown Eastside's credit union. We start serving Bannock and soup around noon. The low-barrier community bank opened in 2004 to fill the void left by the closure of the province’s Four Corners Community Savings. In partnership with Vancity, Pigeon Park Savings serves a community that faces considerable obstacles to obtaining financial services. The branch is a lifeline as so many in the DTES exist on very low incomes, usually only Ministry cheques. Special thanks to Vancity and Community Impact Real Estate Societyfor making the celebration possible. #vancouver #community #creditunion

Meet Junie Désil, Vancity’s Manager of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Reconciliation (DEIR). Junie manages and supports programs focused on DEIR, including Reconciliation, Workplace Inclusion, and Accessibility initiatives. She collaborates with business leaders to implement DEIR strategies, and provides coaching to help improve Vancity’s approach. On top of that, she also co-creates training and learning opportunities to build awareness around anti-racism, inclusion, and allyship, while helping the organization grow as an anti-racist institution. To learn more about Junie and her impactful work, read on! Can you share a few things you’ve been able to achieve in your role?  I am incredibly proud that our team co-created Anti-Racism Learning Sessions for the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). It’s especially gratifying to see the ELT's positive response and their interest in having us facilitate quarterly anti-racism sessions. Additionally, we have done excellent work co-creating learning sessions and resources for the Nominations and Elections Committee with Kristen Rivers’ incredible support. We’re in the midst of delivering Anti-Racism sessions for Vancity leaders, and we have launched the Accessibility Committee in the fall in line with the Accessible BC Act. We’re committed to being a leader in accessibility, striving to exceed current standards and proactively preparing for future legislation. By prioritizing accessibility now, we aim to stay ahead of any upcoming regulations or guidelines, ensuring our organization is fully inclusive and accessible to all. Can you share how you ended up working at Vancity? My career has always been rooted in DEIR work. Before joining Vancity, I worked in various roles focused on social justice and community advocacy mostly in non-profit, in the Downtown East Side and with a focus on women made marginalized. A former Vancity employee encouraged me to apply for this role, and after thinking long and hard about it, I decided to apply. I’m hoping that in my time here I can help support meaningful change in a values-based organization. What’s a benefit of working for Vancity? While there is still work to be done, being part of a values-based organization that continually strives to improve is incredibly rewarding. The opportunity to work in a place that aligns with your personal values, even as it evolves and grows, is a huge benefit. Do you have any advice for anyone looking to get into a similar role or career path to yours? My advice would be to stay curious, keep learning, and remain grounded in your passion for equity and justice. DEIR work is ever-evolving, and ongoing. No course work or workshop will make one an expert, AND it's important to stay informed on social issues and remain open to different perspectives. Building relationships and creating spaces for dialogue are key to making an impact.

The quote reads: "From making spaces more accessible to helping leaders advance their DEIR efforts, it’s rewarding to know that our team’s work is creating a more inclusive environment for both employees, members, and the communities we serve." Below the quote, Junie’s name is displayed in large white text: "Junie Désil." Underneath, her title is shown: "Manager of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Reconciliation (DEIR)." Monday, September 2 is so much more than just a day off. Labour Day highlights the significant contributions of labour organizations in building a fairer world for working people – like paid sick leave, maternity leave, and living wage – to name a few.    In 2011, Vancity became one of the largest private sector employers, setting a standard for fair compensation. And to date in 2024, Vancity has provided $1.4M to support labour movements and organizations campaigning for a just transition, poverty reduction, labour rights, and equity. This includes funding for the Workers Solidarity Network (WSN), an advocacy group with over 350 grassroots members. Vice President, Member Experience at Vancity

A big thank you to CBC’s Dan Burritt for the discussion last night on the evolving payment habits of Vancity members. Our latest report highlights a significant shift: cash withdrawals have decreased by 31% since spring 2018, while digital transactions have more than tripled in the same period. While cash may no longer reign supreme, it’s crucial to ensure that everyone retains the freedom to choose their preferred payment method. Maintaining access to diverse financial options is key to financial inclusion.
