TIAP is actively engaged with our members to identify opportunities that have the potential to have a major impact on human health. #Craniosynostosis is experienced by thousands of #pediatric patients globally and requires open surgery to perform extensive osteotomies. Patients who receive these surgeries require burdensome post-operative molding helmets or an internal assistive device requiring a second procedure for removal. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of visiting Lead Inventor Dr. Dale Podolsky, MD, PhD, FRCSC’s robotics lab at The Wilfred and Joyce Posluns Centre for Image Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention Department at The Hospital for Sick Children to see the first minimally invasive robotic cranial bone cutting tool to improve care for patients experiencing craniosynostosis. Dr. Podolsky and his team are dedicated to improving pediatric care for patients experiencing craniosynostosis through new innovations and technologies — and represent another tremendous example of the leading-edge and highly-impactful work being conducted here in Canada's top #healthresearch cluster.

In the latest instalment of the TIAP Venture Builder Blog, Senior Analyst Mobeen Lalani dives into and provides a step-by-step look at the customer discovery process. In the dynamic world of #healthinnovation, technology developers must navigate a plethora of complex hurdles, from data generation/acquisition to technical, regulatory, and financial challenges, and ultimately, getting your product adopted by a risk-adverse customer: the healthcare system. One of the most critical but somewhat overlooked steps in this journey is robust customer discovery — a major influence on not only successful product market adoption, but a start-up's overall trajectory. Black tie galas may not be a predominant piece of the TIAP DNA, but coming together with colleagues from throughout our dynamic ecosystem to celebrate the amazing successes that have been borne from it absolutely is!! Congratulations to each of this year's Bloom Burton Award nominees and winner Roberto Bellini — and of course to Brian Bloom, Jolyon Burton and the Bloom Burton & Co. team for hosting another superb affair. We can't wait to see what 2025 will bring!

The Sunnybrook Research Institute has long been a fantastic partner to TIAP, coming together with us to translate their cutting-edge #healthresearch into successful new Ontario-based commercial ventures like Vasomune Therapeutics, Inc.... ...So a big thanks to our friends at their Technology Transfer Office for inviting our team members Ido Kaminsky, Dr. Sohaib Siddiqui and Mobeen Lalani to participate in their Intellectual ProperTEA yesterday, discussing the resources TIAP brings to the commercialization table — and hopefully prompting our next great collaboration!!

Collaborating with innovators and entrepreneurs to help build Ontario digital health, medical device, and AI in healthcare companies
A lot of great energy this morning at the 3rd Annual Life Science, Society, and Law Symposium hosted by Gowling WLG, in partnership with Bayer. The symposium had many strong takeaways, here are some of them summarized: ✅ Roxana Sultan, from the Vector Institute, emphasized that the speed of AI R&D shouldn’t be viewed as one singular premise but needs to be appreciated and supported through the successful gradual developments that take us to the endpoint. This hinges on building trust with clinicians at every stage. A special meantion to the concept of glassbox models (my first time hearing this), which was highlighted as a solution for transparency during algorithmic design and model development. ✅ Diane C. Yee, LL.B., from Johnson & Johnson, noted that bottlenecks in AI development and solutions exist not in technical development but in the frameworks for regulatory compliance, which are essential for moving innovations forward. ✅ Dalton Thibodeau, from Bayer, discussed the need to reverse-engineer clinical endpoints and create sustainable reimbursement models to support AI adoption. It was great to hear the special mention of digital twins, utilizing extensive data to simulate patient demographics. ✅ Great to see Biotech champion Andrew Casey stressing the importance of fostering investor relationships and envisioning AI companies as platforms for broader healthcare delivery systems, while noting the ongoing challenge of aligning innovators with regulators. The common thread between the panelists focused on the critical need for collaboration across stakeholders to successfully harness AI/ML in healthcare. It was also a pleasure meeting Jim Wilson, host and founder of the Next Great Big Idea Podcast and Life Sciences Summit. cc: TIAP - Toronto Innovation Acceleration Partners #GBW2024 #LifeSciences #AI #Healthcare #Investment #VentureDevelopement

As per the brilliant #BIONATION2024 participants from across the country, ‘collaboration’ is at the centre of all that we do in our #lifesciences sector — and we couldn’t agree more (with a shout out to all TIAP’s many partners throughout academia, industry, the investment community, and government)!!

Day 2 of #BIONATION2024 kicking off with a great discussion with Minister of Health Hon. Mark Holland, PC, MP emphasizing Canada’s leadership role and the need for collaboration and cooperation not only across the country but around the world to ensure we’re doing our part in preparing for not only the next global health crisis, but to address all areas in which great medical needs persists.

The Canadian government, including key departments Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada | Innovation, Sciences et Développement économique Canada as well as the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario | Agence fédérale de ... have long been critical and very supportive partners for our national #lifesciences ecosystem, including for TIAP... ...So it was fantastic to hear Minister François-Philippe Champagne at #BIONATION2024 speak today about the power of small-medium enterprises in bringing new health #innovation to the world while driving a 'life sciences renaissance...and a new knowledge economy for Canada.' A sincere thank you to the Minister and all those in his department for being a central member of our 'life sciences family'. We look forward to continuing to work together to build upon what we've collectively achieved so far — as the Minister said, "The past is good, but the future can be even better"!

Excited to be spending the next few days with our colleagues in Ottawa for #bionation2024. A big thanks to our illustrious hosts BIOTECanada for once again bringing us together and providing strong national leadership for our sector.

Many thanks to Sean Silcoff for the great article on TIAP portfolio co. Radiant Biotherapeutics. We are extremely proud to have supported the company from founding, and to have now furthered our investment alongside strong partners like Amplitude Ventures. Looking forward to what's next for this highly promising #Ontario #lifesciences venture!
