With the Tour de France wrapped and the Paris Olympics now in full-swing, Stephen Lund ICD.D's post reminds us of the power of collaboration. Here at the Toronto Region Board of Trade, we are grateful for the partnership of Destination Toronto and Toronto Global.   The inspiring Olympic motto—Higher, Faster, Stronger—speaks to the spirit of Canada’s Olympians and what can be achieved when they bring their extraordinary talent, ambition, hard work, and unstinting dedication together. And Stephen's cycling analogy captures the essence of our Toronto Inc. initiative: like a well-oiled cycling peloton, Toronto Global, Destination Toronto, and Toronto Region Board of Trade are riding in formation.   Since its inception, Toronto Inc. has leveraged the combined strengths of our partners in service of Toronto’s growth, competitiveness and economic advantage. Together, we are attracting investment, visitors, jobs and creating a more vibrant, productive and prosperous city. We collaborate to run faster to win new investment, reach higher to grow our businesses, and be stronger as a premier destination for business, tourism, and culture.   Channeling the Olympic spirit, together, we can ensure our city continues to shine brightly on the global stage.

Chief Executive Officer at Toronto Global

As the Tour de France rolls into its final week, I’m reminded of the deep and often unseen teamwork that helps define the race and who wears the yellow jersey. While many casual fans tend not to know this, professional cycling is very much a team sport in which various riders play a distinct role in support of something bigger than their own personal victories or gains. Something similar takes place in my area of focus. As CEO of Toronto Global, I'm reminded daily that we can't build Toronto’s reputation as a world-class destination in isolation. On the contrary, our strength lies in collaboration across partners, industries, geographies, and priorities. In other words, we win faster when we work together. Just as in pro cycling. Enter Toronto Inc., an entity co-founded by Toronto Global, Destination Toronto, and the Toronto Region Board of Trade. It was born in late 2021 from our recognition of the city’s vast potential and the need for a unified vision to bring Toronto’s story to the world. Our yellow jersey? Bolstering Toronto’s global presence and reputation. With crucial support from the City’s Economic Development team, we’ve been hard at work to establish Toronto as the premier destination for business, tourism, and culture. Since its inception, Toronto Inc. has attracted investment and visitors, tackled city challenges, boosted revenue, and created jobs. We want every CEO who visits our city to become a lifelong fan and every tourist to become a repeat visitor. These are big goals, to be sure. But they’re eminently reachable when we work together to advocate for our city. And there’s room for more as we continue this mission. Join us at major events, where we combine efforts to showcase the city’s strengths. If you know someone looking to visit or expand their business, send them Toronto Inc.’s way. You can even become an ambassador by proudly wearing your Toronto hat or other merch. Remember, your involvement shapes Toronto's present and future success. Let’s get that yellow jersey.

  • Our recent congestion polling confirms a stark reality: the Toronto region is in the grip of a severe congestion crisis. The Board's Congestion Task Force is actively working on innovative solutions to get our city moving again. Task Force member Brad Nicpon, Partner at McCarthy Tétrault, sees the strong public response to our questions, including the urgency to tackle this crisis, could spur leaders to take action to alleviate our gridlock and enhance mobility in the region.

Let me share a recent profile from the Toronto Region Board of Trade 😉. Being based in Toronto offers unique advantages for businesses. The city’s vibrant tech ecosystem, diverse talent pool, and strong community support create a fertile ground for innovation and growth. We have a choice to emphasize those origins out in the broader market. Sometimes you shy away, sometimes you lean in. Most often, leaning into the positive reputation is a benefit. When you live and work here, it's easy to overlook. So, when I was interviewed for this article, I enjoyed an opportunity to reflect on what it means for a business and for entrepreneurs to be "based in Toronto". - The local market is vibrant and a good place to start a business. - Talent is strong and relationships here matter. - Innovation is possible and clients here want that. - The foundation provided is a solid support for growing internationally.

Yesterday I wrote to Toronto City Council to express very real concern over continued delays in the renegotiation of the Tripartite Agreement governing Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. It is essential that Billy Bishop Airport be able to operate with certainty and stability well into the future to enable financing of necessary upgrades to better serve the transportation needs of Toronto region residents and businesses. • Residents are clearly fed up with planning their lives around our congested roadways and our recent poll with Ipsos in Canada illustrates the sobering reality: People aren’t just trying to figure out an easier way to get from point A to B, they’re increasingly deciding to take a pass on many of the great things on offer across the Toronto region. Toronto is a growing city and will host many exciting international events and attractions in the coming months and years, including the FIFA World Cup, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and a new WNBA team. Steps like accelerate construction on the Dufferin-Shaw stretch of the Gardiner Expressway will help residents get back to living their lives, without having to plan their days around congestion. I've been talking a lot about Toronto's congestion lately. It's not just a headache for commuters—it's becoming a huge drag on our economic fortunes. In my op-ed in today's Toronto Star, I shared my views into why this is such a fundamentally critical issue for the City. Two startling figures from Toronto Region Board of Trade’s poll with Ipsos is that fully 53 per cent of residents in the GTHA have considered moving outside the region to escape our now legendary gridlock. That number rose to an alarming 64 per cent among our city’s current and future prime workforce – those aged 18-34. From my office, I see the daily struggle on Queens Quay. A line-up of trucks crawling along meaning that service providers and time-sensitive deliveries miss their windows. It's frustrating for commuters, frustrating for customers and it's hurting our productivity to the tune of $11-billion annually. Something’s got to give. That’s why the Toronto Region Board of Trade Congestion Task Force is focused on developing realistic and actionable solutions to address the crisis. More to come! https://lnkd.in/gNNT5skD
