Last night I gave a talk on Learning from Failure to a group of technology CEOs, COOs and CTOs at Peerscale's Annual Retreat. What was interesting was that afterwards many people came up to me and said the same thing, "it must have been really hard to stand up there and speak with such humility and vulnerability". But the thing is, the hardest part was the intimidation of speaking to so many accomplished individuals, many of whom have been inspiring me and sharing their advice with me for years. Sharing the failures in hope of helping others avoid the same was exciting. None of us enjoy experiencing failure but when I reflect back on my career I am so grateful for these challenges because they have taught me the most. Failure is unavoidable. When it happens we need to allow ourselves a short amount of time to grieve or be mad and then we need to reflect, seek feedback, ask questions, extract the lessons learned and turn these challenges into opportunities for improvement. And don't forget to celebrate the efforts and recognize perseverance along the way. Peerscale has given me so much over the years. If you are a Toronto based Technology CEO, COO or CTO and want to learn more, hit me up!

I often get asked for hiring advice but find that many don't like my hiring style In today's skill evolving workplace, I believe that for the majority of roles it is impractical and unnecessary for candidates to have all required skills on day 1 In fact, I believe that when you hire candidates into stretch roles they are more likely to thrive, succeed and be happy. In my opinion, building a team of top talent doesn't only involve hiring that talent, it involves hiring for potential and nurturing and investing in people so they can become top talent at your organization Here's why I believe organizations should welcome this approach: 1. Embrace Growth: Help shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. Hiring for potential creates a culture of continuous improvement 💡 2. Employee Success: Cast a wider net for candidates with potential and a hunger for growth. Skills can be taught, but the right attitude is priceless 🚀 3. Cultivate Diversity: Ditch rigid skill requirements for inclusivity. Embrace diverse backgrounds and experiences for innovation and resilience 🌈 4. Culture of Learning: In a tech-driven world, static skills become obsolete. A culture of learning will keep employees skills updated and adaptable in the face of rapid technological changes ⚙️ 5. Dynamic Workforce: Build a workforce that can pivot, upskill, and reskill as business needs evolve. Adaptability is key in today's competitive landscape 🔄
