Canada’s first paediatric sacral neuromodulation program could improve quality of life for children with treatment-resistant bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD), a condition experienced by almost 20 per cent of school-aged children. During sacral neuromodulation, clinicians implant a small electrical device under the skin of the lower back that stimulates the sacral nerve to help relieve symptoms associated with treatment-resistant BBD. #SKResearch led by Dr. Joana Dos Santos, a Medical Urologist and Project Investigator at SickKids, published in the Canadian Urological Association Journal, chronicles the SNM program’s implementation at SickKids. “It is such a privilege, as a physician, to see children really start to thrive,” says Dos Santos. “Our research shows a significant improvement in quality of life for children, with half of the patients staying symptom-free for over a year.” Read ➡️ https://bit.ly/3Wj2yvl

Inflammation in immune cells may be responsible in part for some severe symptoms in a group of rare genetic conditions called lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). LSDs are a group of rare genetic conditions associated with progressive neurodegeneration, often leading to premature death. The causes for these conditions have been unclear, but a study published in Nature Cell Biology has identified an inflammation-causing cellular mechanism that may contribute to LSD symptoms and help inform the development of future therapies. Read more about the research in a Q&A with #SKResearch leads Drs. Ruiqi Cai, Ori Scott and Spencer Freeman ⤵

All children, regardless of their background or socio-economic status, should have access to genetic testing that could save their lives. CHEO, The Hospital for Sick Children and Genetic Alliance’s iHope Genetic Health (iGH) program, have partnered to make that a reality. Last month, they launched the first pro bono genetics testing program aimed at supporting children in need – undiagnosed children from low and middle-income countries. SickKids and CHEO were first to be chosen as the inaugural lab partnership in Genetic Alliance's iGH program. This collaboration, the first of many, will extend the reach of genome and exome sequencing to those who need it most.
