Exceptional care for every patient, every time.

About us

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is a 423-bed acute care facility and academic health sciences centre. As the only tertiary health care provider in the region, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre provides comprehensive care to more than 245,000 people in a region the size of France. TBRHSC teaches the next generation of health care providers and advances medical research through the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI). Patients benefit from interprofessional teams of dedicated health care providers and access to leading-edge medical technology and clinical trials. TBRHSC is proudly affiliated with Lakehead University and Confederation College and is a host training facility for students from the NOSM University, as well as other medical schools. TBRHSC operates on sacred land. We respectfully acknowledge that we work on the traditional lands of the people of Fort William First Nation. This land is the territory of the Anishinabek Nation and is home to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850. Today, Thunder Bay is the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work together in this community and on this territory. We are committed to embedding equity, diversity and inclusion in all the care, education and research that we do. We believe that our differences are key to our growth as an organization and a community, and to our ability to develop innovative approaches to deliver exceptional care to patients, every time.

  • There are many approaches to managing pain during labour. At Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), we have many options including supportive coaching, warm baths, changing positions, birthing balls, sterile water injections, entonox, IV narcotics and epidurals. The team of anesthesiologists work closely with our labour and delivery department to offer 24-hour epidural support. An epidural is administered by an anesthesiologist through a tiny tube “catheter” inserted into your back and sits close to the nerve roots supplying your birth canal. Infusion of numbing medications through the catheter creates an area of numbness mainly between the belly button and thighs and sometimes all the way to your feet. While you may still feel contractions and pressure with a well working epidural depending on the stage of labour, the pain drastically decreases and you remain alert and awake throughout. At TBRHSC, after counselling, we encourage every pregnant mother in labour to make their own choices about what type of pain relief they prefer as their labour progresses.

  • It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Gary Cooper. A Patient Family Advisor (PFA) since 2013, Gary was not only an active member of the PFA Council, but a cornerstone of our community. As a two-time transplant recipient, he was the face and the voice of many presentations and media events for Trillium Gift of Life Network throughout Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. Gary’s passion, commitment and unwavering support was truly inspiring, and his dedication to Patient Family Centred Care (PFCC) was second to none. Whether he was providing PFCC orientation to the new hires or introducing current staff to the PFAs and driving home the importance PFCC, Gary was in his element as an educator. When Gary wasn’t teaching, he was volunteering his time with NOSM University | Université EMNO, working with student doctors to help them develop their skills, efficiency and interview skills, by roleplaying the part of a patient. His many contributions have made a significant impact in our organization and beyond, leaving an indelible mark. His absence will be felt greatly by all of us. Gary’s kindness, wisdom and positive spirit touched many lives and we are grateful for the time that we had with him. In this difficult time, let us remember Gary and the legacy that he leaves behind. As a PFA Council, we will continue to honour his memory by striving to uphold the values and standards for which he so passionately advocated. We send our deepest condolences to Gary’s family, friends, and all those affected by this loss. A Celebration of Life will be taking place Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the Italian Cultural Centre (132 Algoma St. S). The flags at the Hospital will be lowered to half-mast at noon on July 25 in honour of Gary.

  • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆?   The Patient Experience Survey (PES) is a Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC) engagement strategy that gives patients a chance to provide feedback about their experience at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). Responses from the survey provide valuable insight into how we can provide care that is respectful of, and responsive to, patient/family preferences, needs and values. Additionally, since survey collection happens across Ontario’s hospitals, participation allows us to ensure that our services meet both community and provincial standards of care.   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗘𝗦 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳?   By focusing on the PFCC concepts of dignity and respect, collaboration, and participation, the PES helps staff gain a deeper understanding into how patient experiences vary across the different populations and areas in our organization. Feedback also provides an opportunity to integrate the patient’s voice into our practices, and ensures that we provide services which are guided by patient/family values in a meaningful way.   𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? The PES is distributed through email or SMS and can be completed by any patient that has recently received care or services at TBRHSC. While signing in at any TBRHSC registration service desks, patients should expect to be asked if they would like to provide their email or phone number for the PES. Patients may also choose to sign up for a PES within 48 hours of discharge by emailing [email protected] or calling Patient Advocate (807-684-6211). The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and the email address or phone number provided is only used for the patient’s most recent visit and is never shared with any third parties.   Find out more about Patient and Family Centred Care by visiting https://lnkd.in/gMs92VXH

  • The OAMRS- Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences celebrated the best in the profession at their awards gala, held at the University Club in Toronto on June 21st. It was a red carpet event, hosted by Noor Ra’fat, a news reporter and weather anchor for Global News Toronto. Many awards were handed out, but we would like to highlight two awards given to staff from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). Monica Young, an MRT at TBRHSC, is this year’s Recent Graduate Award winner. Known for her contribution as a peer tutor to her fellow students, Monica excelled academically at Confederation College with a First Class Standing. In 2023, Monica had the highest mark on the national certification exam out of more than 500 students. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Student Union of Confederation College Award and the CAMRT Award of Excellence. The Angiography MRT team at TBRHSC is the recipient of the 2024 OAMRS Team Award. The Angiography MRT team works in the only angiography suite in Northwestern Ontario. As a result, the team is versed in a large variety of procedures – many of them that were originally performed by physicians. Led by Christy Laatu MRT(R), the Angiography MRT team operates under enormous pressure and stress, yet their ability to co-ordinate and support one another is what makes this team outstanding. In fact, the team is responsible for developing TBRHSC’s aneurysm rupture pathway. No small feat, the procedure is the result of a multidisciplinary planning simulation involving 100 hospital professionals. Thanks to this team, patients who present from anywhere in Northwestern Ontario with a ruptured aneurysm can now be offered an endovascular repair for rupture, with the associated potential for increased survival over an open surgical repair. All of the MRTs have also been trained on TBRHSC’s new operating room C-arm and the newest team member recently handled a middle of the night emergency using the C-arm and resulting in an excellent outcome for the patient. The team’s nomination comes with a recommendation from two vascular surgeons, and a charge nurse who describe how the work and cohesiveness of this team has played a significant role in helping the hospital to expand its cardiovascular services and cardiac surgery to a community where there can be innumerable geographic and organizational barriers to patient care. For all award winners, and photos of the event please follow the OAMRS Facebook page or visit the website: www.oamrs.org 1 📸: Monica Young. 2 📸: (L-R) Christy Laatu and Janine Richards. 3 📸: (L-R) Christy Laatu, Janine Richards, and Monica Young. 4 📸: (Back row) Joshua Cutting, Christy Laatu, Mike Gasparotto, Brad Arabia.
