I am thrilled to share some insights from our ongoing fieldwork on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural soils in New Brunswick. We started this project by conducting Soil, Water and Topography (SWAT) mapping of potato and cover crop fields, followed by comprehensive soil sampling across each SWAT map zone and analyzed them for various soil physical and chemical parameters. Then, we installed soil collars in each zone to measure GHG emissions, including CO2, N2O, and CH4, using the highly precise Li-COR survey-based soil gas flux instruments. We also measured soil moisture, temperature, and electrical conductivity from each zone. This study aims to compare GHG emissions from potato and cover crop fields, ultimately aiding in developing best management practices to achieve net-zero goals in Canada. A special thanks to Aitazaz A Farooque, PhD, P.Eng, Potato board New Brunswick for their invaluable resources and support and precision agriculture research team involved during the field work.

Excited to share another aspect of my research on variable rate irrigation! In our field, we've installed Sentek moisture probes attached to a METOS weather station. The field is mapped using the patented SWAT BOX, an autonomous soil mapping hardware system that collects the data needed to create Soil Water and Topography (SWAT) MAPS. SWAT Water is a unique and advanced feature of the SWAT Records App that integrates weather information, soil moisture, soil texture, and SWAT Map information to generate volumetric water content and actual plant-available water maps for the entire field. These maps can be used to apply variable rate irrigation, optimizing water usage and ensuring efficient irrigation across different zones in the field.
