The BC provincial government has just announced the next 20 cities to receive housing targets under the Housing Supply Act, in addition to the initial 10 municipalities announced in 2023.
The new cohort includes Central Saanich, Chilliwack, Colwood, Esquimalt, Kelowna, City of Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, Nanaimo, New Westminster, North Cowichan, North Saanich, City of North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Prince George, Sidney, Surrey, View Royal, West Kelowna, and White Rock. The Province will work with these communities to ensure they meet their targets, which will be announced this summer.
The Province has also outlined that it expects Municipalities to take action to expedite housing approvals through following initiatives:
- Provincial legislation for small-scale multi-unit housing
- Designated Transit-Oriented Areas
- Updated Official Community Plans
- Streamlined development processes
- Standardized housing designs (to be available later this year)
