Our President, Chris Hall, was proud to sign the renewed Conservation Agreement to protect Southern Resident Killer Whales in Vancouver today. Our full statement on the agreement can be found below:
The Shipping Federation of Canada represents the international vessels carrying goods between Canada and markets around the world. The unique collaboration reflected in this conservation agreement and carried out though the associated ECHO Program, has enabled stakeholders from government, Indigenous groups, environmental groups, and industry to work constructively together through differing points of view over the last five years. In so doing, we have achieved meaningful benefits for the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales whose essential habitat overlaps with shipping to and from Canada’s largest commercial port.
This is no small feat. However, the precarious status of these animals demands that we not only continue the major ship slowdowns developed under the agreement to date, but also strive to do even better going forward. The Shipping Federation of Canada is proud to sign this agreement, under which we renew our commitment to our ongoing collaboration with our diverse stakeholder partners, and to making further progress on our common goal of reducing the impacts of large ship operations on Southern Resident Killer Whales.
