Hello, As you may or may not know, a new Prairies Provinces chapter has been created within SFPE (Society for Fire Protection Engineers) that represents fire professionals within Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. As a new chapter of the SFPE within Canada, we’re excited to reach out to new members interested in the SFPE and being part of a growing group of like-minded professionals. The Prairie Province Chapter’s Vision is: to define, develop, and advance the use of engineering best practices; expand the scientific and technical knowledge base; and educate the global fire safety community, in order to reduce fire risk. The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has been a prominent professional organization since 1950. As a leading global society, it represents professionals working in the field of fire protection and fire safety engineering. With over 5,000 members and more than 120 chapters worldwide, including more than 20 student chapters, SFPE has been rapidly growing. Information about the SFPE can be found here: https://www.sfpe.org/home The Society has six chapters and two student chapters located in Canada that work to advance the mission of the Society on a local level. The six professional chapters include: Atlantic Canadian Chapter British Columbia Chapter National Capital Region Chapter Prairies Provinces Chapter Southern Ontario Chapter St. Lawrence Chapter We want to welcome professionals to the chapter and invite you to sign up for a joint presentation coinciding with our chapter's official kickoff on September 25th. The event will include a joint webinar hosted by all Canadian Chapters, and will include Prairie Province members from across the region. In-person events in select cities are being planned with information to follow for those signing up for the event. If you are interested in attending in-person, please reach out to the following people: Matthew Hopley ([email protected]) if you are located in Calgary, Ishraat Masood ([email protected]) if you are located in Winnipeg, or Andrea Nylen ([email protected]) if you are located in Regina. We have been a proud supporter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and our local SFPE Southern Ontario Chapter since its inception. Great to see the Society recognizing the efforts required for volunteers to donate time, in addition to their regular workload. Thank you to Seneca Polytechnic for your continuous support in these endeavours. Our students and industry appreciate it greatly. #senecaproud

We would like to extend a special thank you to Seneca Polytechnic Alumni for making it possible for this eager group of students to attend the SFPE Southern Ontario event on Wildland Fire, with Ken Cox giving an entertaining seminar! The discussion hit home for the Seneca Polytechnic pillars of education. The impact of EDI and Truth and Reconciliation were highlighted as we heard about the techniques used by Indigenous populations for centuries to support the lands. Sustainability was considered in the discussion on determining if a fire should be allowed to burn. Hearing how fire is necessary for many wildlife habitats was a unique perspective we forget. The importance of Human Skills like Collaboration and Communication were mentioned when working with local fire departments or when support comes from other provinces or even countries like Mexico! Of course critical thinking and problem solving are vital when every situation develops quickly and uniquely. Even flexible technology was used to deliver the presentation and discussions on technology's benefit to their daily tasks also was noted. We were #senecaproud to be in attendance with so many successful alumni and seeing our current students interacting with them before, during, and after. Thank you again Seneca Alumni for making it a possibility.
