About us
Sedgwick Strategies is a firm dedicated to assisting major projects to achieve success. In today’s politically charged environment almost every major project, from mining to transmission lines, is contentious. Modern companies need the tools necessary to de-risk their projects across diverse stakeholder groups. We are committed to getting worthwhile projects in the industrial, natural resource and infrastructure sectors to “YES.” Unfortunately, in British Columbia the list of unsuccessful projects is very long. Pipelines, mines, transmission lines and even public infrastructure projects have foundered as a result of the inability to the project to address “soft issue risk” or as some describe it, issues around social license.

This month the B.C. government and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announced an investment of $195 million into the Tahltan territory to enhance road safety and reliability including opening up improved access and increased service for First Nations and local communities. In a statement from the Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, Josie Osborne noted that "this significant investment into expanded and improved highways in B.C.’s northwest – an area of such rich critical mineral potential – benefits people, communities, and our climate". In a joint press release Chief Carmen McPhee, Tahltan Band highlights that "Our three Tahltan communities have struggled for generations with safe passage ʹvia highways 37 and 51 - to southern communities where our people depend on the everyday facets of life, including emergency health care, food, and other everyday necessities. While we applaud this announcement, there is more work to do, not only in Tahltan territory, but elsewhere in the province.". Tanya Corbet, Vice President & Director of Client Services at Sedgwick Strategies notes "Infrastructure funding is critical for Indigenous communities in our province, as it not only allows for enhanced safety and access to essential services, but it also enables sustainable economic growth in the future. This is a good example of reconciliation in action that will create a stronger economy and safer communities across the province". Read more below: https://lnkd.in/gKFBZveG

As the population of Canada and British Columbia continues to grow, it is crucial to build and maintain the infrastructure necessary for economic growth. Earlier this month, three levels of government finalized a deal that will provide over $1.6 billion in federal funding to communities in B.C. for the next five years to build and maintain critical infrastructure. Local governments in B.C. will receive $300 million in funding in 2024-2025 to address infrastructure needs such as public transit, water and waste systems, and the housing crisis. Companies contracted by local governments in B.C. for infrastructure work will need to navigate a complex regulatory environment and consult with impacted Indigenous Nations. The Calgary Stampede is an integral part of Western Canadian history and culture. It’s also a hub for the energy and resource sectors to get together. Sedgwick Strategies’ Jack Middleton was there, with his boots on, catching up with clients and meeting new people. Thanks especially to the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC), Brian Jean and the Government of Alberta, and Blackfish Enterprises/NCSG Crane & Heavy Haul for hosting important events that highlighted the importance of the resource economy and Indigenous partnerships. #Yahoo

Earlier this month our Executive Vice President & Partner, Allie Meeres, and our Vice President & Director of Client Services, Tanya Corbet attended the US Independence Day event at the US Consulate. It was a fantastic event celebrating the strong ties between our countries. It was wonderful to connect with Ana Himelic and Counsel General Jim DeHart from the US Embassy, and the Speaker of Legislative Assembly of B.C., Raj Chouhan.

This week, our Client Services Manager, Johanna Godt, played a key role in coordinating a tour of a mine pit to observe the latest progress. This tour is part of an ongoing dialogue between the engaged proponent and the Indigenous nation. It highlighted the collaborative efforts to ensure that mining activities support shared goals of economic development, environmental stewardship, and responsible resource management.

Today Sedgwick Strategies was with Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band, and some of his band members, looking at past producing mines in OIB territory. The Osoyoos Indian Band is taking the time to build a progressive and comprehensive approach to mining, mineral exploration, critical minerals and mineral claims. #criticalminerals #mining #mineralexploration #reclamation #reconciliation #indigenousbusiness
