Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting a #LongwoodsBreakfastSeries event - Matt Hackenberg of IQVIA Canada presented and spoke with Helen Angus, CEO of AMS Healthcare An inspiring and optimistic conversation! Longwoods Publishing
CEO AMS Healthcare, Distinguished Fellow Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto
This morning, I had the pleasure of speaking to and hosting Matt Hackenberg from IQVIA Canada for the #LongwoodsBreakfastSeries. As the Associate Product and Strategy Director, AI for Healthcare, he shared a wealth of his knowledge and expertise with everyone present at the University of Toronto - Rotman School of Management and our online audience. It was inspiring to see how other organizations are driving the same mission and values that AMS Healthcare and our community hold dear. Matt’s insights into how IQVIA has developed over a hundred predictive algorithms to bridge gaps in healthcare shows us that there is transformative potential for AI and machine learning. Yet, we still have many barriers to overcome. In today's event, we explored common challenges, such as proof of effectiveness, data privacy concerns, and workflow integration. Here are three takeaways: 1. Building trust in AI among health professionals is crucial, as patients will mirror their trust. 2. Collaboration and communication are essential for accelerating the adoption and effectiveness of AI in healthcare. 3. Even the most advanced AI solutions can fall short without proper implementation. Establishing robust implementation frameworks that prioritize stakeholder involvement is important. Thank you, Matt Hackenburg, Longwoods Publishing, and to everyone who joined us today!

Earlier this year, our students placed second at the 2024 Business School Alliance for Health Management Case Competition, which had a focus on proposing solutions to the workforce shortages challenging health systems across the globe. Team members included Shabdit S., ME MBA’ 24; David Guo, ME MBA’ 24; Priya Thakkar, ME MBA’ 25; Yifan Cao, ME MBA’26; and Sabrina Hundal, MD/MBA’25. Rotman is a member of BAHM and the case competition is one of the key membership benefits, providing opportunities for learning, networking, and personal growth. As Shab described ”the competition provided us with a platform to showcase our skills and learn from peers across different institutions. As the only Canadian team among schools from the USA and the Indian School of Business, we embraced the opportunity to represent Rotman and demonstrate our innovative approach to problem-solving." And David noted “We came in second, amongst 8 other teams, but at the end of the day it isn't the result that matters, it is the laughs, the late nights, and the bonds that were made throughout this journey that will forever be ingrained in my memory." Congratulations!

Our Centre supports a variety of learning experiences for our students outside the classroom – and one of our favourites is the Yale Health Services Innovation case competition. This year a team of three students Jason DaGama, PharmD, Kimia Khoee and Lisa B. represented Rotman and had a fantastic experience. https://www.yalehsi.com/ The case comp gave them an opportunity to showcase their skills and explore health system challenges from the US perspective. They met MBA and MPH students from elite universities and industry professionals related to the case. As Jason noted “the YHSI case comp provided personal and professional growth, combining rigorous problem solving with valuable networking opportunities.” Although they didn't secure a win, it was a great opportunity to gain exposure to the US healthcare landscape and enjoy a mix of learning and networking. Well done!

Dr. Soroush Saghafian, from Harvard University, highlights the potential of #AI in #healthcare at our research roundtable next week. Emphasizing the need to move beyond mere associations to causal reasoning, he introduces the concept of a "centaur" model. This is where human intuition collaborates with AI algorithms for better decision-making. He shares insights from the PIAS-Lab's latest research and collaborations with institutions like the Mayo Clinic, aiming to revolutionize healthcare practices.
