Operation Eyesight Universal

Last month, along with our partners at the Iten County Referral Hospital and County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, we celebrated 15 villages as avoidable blindness-free in the county, bringing it to a total of 50 villages in #Kenya to date! We trained 36 community health volunteers to conduct eye screenings, identify those with eye diseases and make referrals. All those identified with eye conditions were provided with treatment, including sight-saving surgeries. That’s another 100,000 people who have received health education and who have been empowered to prioritise and take charge of their eye health!

Programme Manager Tapobrat Bhuyan presented a talk entitled "Enhancing Eye Health Access for Women Living in Remote Hilly Terrain of Udhampur District in Jammu & Kashmir," while Project Officer Emmanuel Benia Tanti tackled a similar topic in his talk, "Optimizing Eye Care Services in Hilly Regions." Both have so much hands-on experience to share about the delivery of #eyehealth care to remote and hard-to-reach areas!

We are thrilled to be expanding our Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) program in Moradabad in partnership with the C.L. Gupta Eye Institute - India. Thanks to Rotary International, Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park, Rotary Club of Moradabad East, Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise and our generous #donors, we have provided a new van, mobile screening equipment, and laser treatment equipment to the institute, meaning that we can now reach premature babies in five more districts in the #Moradabad area. #ROP is a serious eye condition that can occur in pre-term babies. It is difficult to detect without proper screening and must be treated early to prevent irreversible vision loss or #blindness. Thanks to this program expansion, we will be able to screen another 1,500 premature infants and provide #treatment for more than 400 of them. The impact of this project on pre-term babies and their families can’t be overstated. Early detection and treatment of ROP are crucial in ensuring a healthier future for these vulnerable infants. By expanding our reach and resources, we are offering hope and improved quality of life to many families who might otherwise face the challenges of visual impairment in their children.

We were well represented at the VISION 2020 INDIA conference in Ludhiana this month. Our team delivered three oral presentations and showcased one poster. Project Coordinator Aditya Sharma won the Best Paper for Oral Presentation award, while our Head of Resource Mobilization Subhadip Bhattacharya secured second place in the Best Poster competition. We are also proud to announce that our Global Director of International Programmes Dr Ritu Ghosh has joined the board of VISION 2020 as Vice President. She chaired and moderated three sessions during the conference.  We also took home an award as a founding member for our overall contribution to VISION 2020. It was an inspiring event that underscored our collective commitment to improving vision health. 

👞 For many years, Abraham supported his family through his shoe repair business. But when #cataracts impaired his vision, he could no longer work and had to close up shop. Following a visit from a community health volunteer, Abraham travelled to our partner hospital and received cataract surgery free of charge.
