Last week we took a moment to celebrate scientific innovations at the 2024 Gairdner Foundation Awards Gala! This year’s winners have made tremendous contributions to the field of genomics and beyond, including: 🧬 Shankar Balasubramanian, David Klenerman, and Pascal Mayer paved the way for Next Generation DNA sequencing technology which makes DNA sequencing faster, cheaper, and more accurate. 🔬 Christian Landry’s work seeks to answer: how do mutations change the way cells work? Landry’s research uses cutting-edge methods to understand how complex diseases are developed. 🧫 Michel Sadelain and Zelig Eshhar have done trailblazing research on CAR T-cell therapy which is a type of cancer therapy that genetically engineers immune cells to be able to target and destroy cancer cells. 🍼 Meghan Azad’s work has studied over 3,000 children to understand how infant feeding practises, and breast milk components influence health and disease. 🦠 Gagandeep Kang’s work has helped us better understand the interactions between the environment and infections in children. As always, it’s lovely to connect with our colleagues over at Genome Canada and Génome Québec

Did you know that up to 60% of the physical inputs of the world’s economy could be produced by biological means? 🤯 In a new blog post, we discuss the power of biomanufacturing to accomplish a greener and more sustainable future. Biomanufacturing uses living things, mostly in the form of micro-organisms (bacteria, yeasts, algae etc.), cells, or enzymes, to produce a wide range of products, including chemicals, fuels, materials, food and ingredients, and even medicines. Biomanufacturing emerged as a revolutionary approach with the potential to transform industries while minimizing their environmental impact.
