Last week, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Council for Indigenous Business held their third economic reconciliation consultation. At George Brown College, we welcomed leaders from post-secondary institutions, employers and Indigenous communities to unpack the challenges and opportunities in recruiting and retaining First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples as students, employers and team members. This knowledge exchange also focused on the role of Indigenous Advisory Councils, the path to levelling the playing field for Indigenous Peoples, and the role of inclusion across organizations and institutions as we work to achieve true reconciliation.  Key takeaways included: ➡️ Building trust and meaningful connections with Indigenous communities early on is crucial for attracting and retaining Indigenous talent. ➡️ Thinking outside of the box by adapting education requirements in job postings to value lived experience and expanding remote work options to encourage Indigenous employees living on-reserve to apply are key to creating equitable outcomes. ➡️ Clear pathways to success for Indigenous Peoples require prioritizing culturally sensitive education, providing comprehensive support systems, and facilitating workplace transitions through vehicles such as internships. ➡️ Employers must create inclusive and safe workplaces for Indigenous employees, going beyond basic cultural sensitivity training. The insights and feedback from this discussion will be instrumental in shaping our upcoming report and the next phase of our Economic Reconciliation Initiative, The Way Forward. This report will feature practical recommendations, key learnings, case studies, and examples to help create a more inclusive economic landscape. We extend our gratitude to each participant and our partners for their invaluable support. A special thank you to Dr. Gervan Fearon for his thoughtful remarks to anchor our discussion and the George Brown College team for a phenomenal traditional Indigenous lunch. CEO, Ontario Chamber of Commerce. High-growth business leader, corporate director, reputation, crisis & leadership communication strategist, public policy advocate

What if Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump and Joe Biden were CEOs reporting to corporate boards? In my Toronto Star column today, I contrast leadership succession in business and politics to highlight a problem that cuts across partisan lines: those who govern democracies are often terrible at governing themselves. The problem is both structural and cultural: removing even a massively unpopular or unethical leader against their will is incredibly difficult; transparency and accountability mechanisms are weak; and the tribal culture of politics makes a rational discussion of a leader's performance almost impossible. But just as corporate governance has changed, perhaps political governance can, too. The Reform Act championed by Conservative MP Michael Chong is a good example. It's time for parties to go further. The stakes couldn't be higher for businesses, workers and communities. In turbulent times, we need leaders who can make smart economic, social and environmental decisions. The change must begin from within. #business #cdnpoli #successionplanning #governance
