This important report highlights the impact of vessel strikes on whale mortality on the California coast. The risk of ship strikes pose a significant threat to cetaceans along the entirety of the Pacific Coast – and worldwide. Over the past two decades, shipping traffic has surged by 300%, with a continued annual increase of 2-3%. Many of the busiest shipping routes intersect with crucial cetacean habitats. Without mitigation, we can expect vessel strikes to continue and increase. Ocean Wise is working to mitigate these risks in BC and Washington waters with the Whale Report Alert System. The system alerts mariners of whales in their vicinity, using data from citizen science reports, hydrophones, and infrared cameras. Learn more about the WRAS here: https://lnkd.in/gYeYFd5M Ocean Wise will be presenting on this topic at the 25th Biennial conference on Biology of Marine Mammals, #SMM2024, in Perth this November. New science-policy report available! Ship strikes are contributing to endangered whale mortality along the California coast. We spoke with researchers and policy experts to explore what science says about several potential interventions to reduce whale mortality due to vessel strikes. Our findings are presented in a new report entitled Whale Vulnerability to Ship Strikes Along the California Coast, now available on OST’s website. https://lnkd.in/dJjFNCZN #whales #science #policy #shipstrikes #vesselstrikes

Great partners are so critical to the work that we do. Thanks to Tru Earth for being a partner who shows up with purpose every time!
I attended the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit, I had the opportunity to witness a remarkable session led by Brad Liski of Tru Earth and Jason Buechel of Whole Foods Market that discussed How Visionary Companies are Shaping a Sustainable Future. They explored how industry leaders are using disruption to drive environmental innovation and sustainable business models, an approach that deeply resonates with our mission. This aligns with the work we do through partnerships like our Shoreline Cleanups, presented by Tru Earth in the U.S., where we're driving tangible environmental impact. A big thank you to Brad for the invitation to join such an inspiring event! #Leadership #Sustainability #ConcordiaSummit #OceanWise #TruEarth #ClimateAction

I'm excited to share that my project, "Underwater Debris Detection for Cleaner Oceans," has been accepted for Ocean Wise’s Eco-Action Accelerator! Over the summer we have been using Ocean AID's Marlin ATR system to scan locations around Sidney and Victoria BC, to find hotspots for retrieval. We have retrieved shoreline and floating debris from James and Sidney Island during our scanning in those areas. We will be retrieving ghost fishing gear in hotspot areas to prevent further harm to marine life. 📷 We detected a lot of traps (and derelict boats) in Sidney harbor. We also found a long line of small circular objects, which our ATR system detected some of them as traps but with only a 50% confidence. Does anyone know what they might be? This project is dedicated to creating cleaner, healthier oceans, so stay tuned on updates this September and October. Thanks so much Ocean Wise for the amazing program and the ongoing support of youth, entrepreneurship, and ocean ecosystems! #OceanConservation #Sustainability #AI #GhostFishingGear #UnderwaterDebris #Sonar #Sidescan #Startup

In this video, I had the privilege of capturing the daily lives of fishermen at the seaside. Through this lens, I aimed to shed light on the critical importance of preserving life under the sea. One significant challenge faced by fishermen is the staggering 50% waste generated during their fishing activities, highlighting a pressing issue that demands attention. Beyond showcasing the challenges, the video serves a dual purpose: to raise awareness about the vital role of marine life and to inspire action. I advocate for a transformative approach where we repurpose sea waste into beautiful artefacts like school bags and stunning interior designs. By harnessing creativity and innovation, we can not only reduce waste but also create sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and our communities. Join me in this movement to protect our oceans and marine ecosystems. Let's work together to turn sea waste into treasures, preserving the beauty and vitality of life under the sea for generations to come.
