Everybody’s favourite annual top 10 mining and metals risk list is out again! Unsurprisingly, EY’s list is full of environmental and social risks, despite (also unsurprisingly) dropping the increasingly touchy catch-all ESG acronym. Only just in the shadow of “capital” at #1, environmental stewardship in #2 focuses on waste, water and nature. Closely following is geopolitics, focused on resource nationalism (or more accurately tackling growing local expectations in resource-rich places for a fairer and more meaningful slice of the pie). Resource and reserve depletion is followed by social license to operate as #5, a constant top risk in this list for years now, as the industry continues to struggle with an enduring trust deficit (also closely linked to the resource nationalism solutions, i.e. a focus on partnership). Oddly, climate change in #7 focuses only on decarbonization, with a glaring blind spot re climate risks to operations and value chains. All in all an interesting update reflecting the leadership mindset that in industry lately (though the total dropping of governance is a bit alarming!) #mining #esg #sociallicense #risk #environment #socialrisk
