Most beta-glucan testing methods have been designed specifically for grains. Grains are (1-4)-beta-glucans so the use of grain-specific tests is not accurate for mushrooms. Polysaccharide tests are not valid since they also measure alpha-glucans such as starch. Starch is a very common polysaccharide that is present in large amounts in staple foods such as potatoes, most grains, corn, and rice. The presence of these starchy materials in a mushroom product will elevate a polysaccharide test and give a false positive for the basidiomycete beta-glucans. The Megazyme test method is designed for measuring beta-glucans and alpha-glucans in mushrooms and yeast. It was first developed in 2004 and was updated last year. This method has been utilized by the USDA and several other researchers for testing mushroom beta-glucans. This test detects and quantifies soluble and insoluble (1-3),(1-6)-beta-glucans. Using the Megazyme test we can test all products, whether they are mushroom powders, extract powders, or pure mycelium powders (no grain). #mushrooms #mushroomextracts #betaglucans #alphaglucans #usda #starch #mycelium

As we get back into school and the busy season for most industries, we highly encourage all to read. "Although chaga has shown the most growth overall, lion's mane and reishi have the most clinical data to support healthy levels of stress and anxiety," said Skye Chilton, Nammex CEO. "Properly grown and extracted lion's mane, reishi and turkey tail contain high levels of beta-glucans, which provide a lot of today's most in-demand benefits." https://lnkd.in/gRdSjzqY NutraIngredients #supplements #stress #anxiety #healthandwellness #mentalhealth #stressmanagement #naturalproducts #mushrooms #mushroomextracts

Our recent visit to China included a stop at one of our Cordyceps farms. From donning Tyvek suits to witnessing the meticulous cultivation process, we're always amazed by the precision and care our growers and partners use to produce high-quality Cordyceps militaris. Alongside a handful of industry experts, Bill Chioffi (our COO) shared commentary on the importance of consistent and reputable clinical research on natural ingredients. For those interested in clinical research, you will get a lot out of the collective perspective on this topic. Chioffi shared, "The main weak point of many otherwise well conducted clinical studies on plants and mushrooms is the lack of characterization of the starting materials. This leaves the researchers trying to replicate the science grasping at straws in order to do so with the lack of information present in the “materials and methods” sections of the studies for what was actually administered in the study." Sidenote: The Nammex team offers condolences to late James Gormley's friends and family. We will miss his keen eye for detail, experience and transparency. His contributions to the industry will be revered for years to come. https://lnkd.in/dMVRPJAC #clinicalresearch #nie #naturalingrients #science #ftc #regulatorycompliance #nutraceuticals #testing Shaheen Majeed, Nena Dockery, Annie Eng, James (Jim) Roza, Mark G. Flying back from the United Natural Products Alliance annual meeting held in gorgeous Deer Valley outside Salt Lake. I’m reflecting on the power of nature and the natural products community. Tieraona Low Dog, MD gave a keynote speech which reminded me yet again that nature is the best teacher if we just allow it to be. A simple but profound thought I’ve heard her hammer home for over 20 years. We learned, laughed, went on a UTV adventure and threw some axes. Thank you all new and existing colleagues for all your contributions to a great event. ☮️🌱🍄🟫🌏

As mushrooms ascend in popularity in the west, it's important to note that the Chinese mushroom industry and culture are centuries - or even millennia - ahead of the status quo here. Skye Chilton and his team at Real Mushrooms and Nammex: Organic Mushroom Extracts have been working with Chinese mushroom farmers for decades, and in our recent podcast together he shares insights into some of the mushrooms he's come across on the team's annual visit to China to visit their cultivation partners.
