The opening of a new stroke rehabilitation clinic for residents of York Region (The Regional Municipality of York) is bringing essential services closer to home. This clinic, the first of its kind in York Region, provides timely access to critical rehabilitation services within days or weeks of hospital discharge, when stroke patients often experience the most significant cognitive and physical improvements. Located in Vaughan, the clinic is dedicated to serving patients from both Mackenzie Health and Oak Valley Health hospitals who require specialized care. Stroke remains a leading cause of disability in Canada, with one stroke occurring every five minutes, according to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Research supported by The National Institutes of Health underscores the importance of receiving rehabilitation within 60 to 90 days post-stroke for optimal recovery. "In the past, our residents had to travel to Toronto for stroke rehabilitation or make do with community resources that did not fully address their specific needs," says Terri Stuart-McEwan, our Vice President, Clinical Programs and Chief Nurse Executive. Two provincial programs have significantly reduced nursing vacancies at Windsor Regional Hospital. A key initiative is the $25,000 signing bonus provided by the Ontario government for nurses who commit to working full-time in the community for two years. This bonus has been pivotal in retaining nurses who might otherwise work in the US. Another successful program is the externship for nursing students, offering hands-on experience and a pathway to permanent employment.
