Our #Ontario #hydrogeology and #contaminatedsites teams recently held our annual staff development program (aka Training Days) in Guelph. Our teams covered important topics, including #healthandsafety, technical best practices, and hands-on field demonstrations over two days in the field and office. Thanks to the enthusiasm of our participants and trainers, we met the objectives for our 2024 Training Days: ·        Strengthening and growing the quality and consistency of our work and communication on our teams ·        Building our team culture/dynamics by connecting individuals in problem solving exercises ·        Having leaders and subject matter experts demonstrate and teach core skills in project planning, field methods and data collection, and analysis ·        Introducing staff to the great resources we have on our team, to accelerate onboarding and team building This year our teams had the opportunity to learn in a field setting, thanks to generous participation from the City Of Guelph and the Landshark Group. Elevating Leadership Practices: Session Two of MES West in Calgary Last week, the MES West cohort gathered in Calgary at Matrix Solutions Inc. offices for the second session of our comprehensive leadership program, facilitated by Leadership Science Institute. This session continued our exploration of People Performance Strategies, providing our leaders with tools and insights to refine their leadership skills effectively. Guest speaker Brian Fuchs shared his journey and strategies for personal leadership growth, inspiring our cohort with real-world applications of the principles we discussed. Key insights from this session emphasized strategic leadership actions: • Adapting Coaching and Mentoring: Leaders learned the importance of recognizing when to coach for development versus when to mentor for guidance. • Proactive Performance Management: We discussed the necessity of addressing performance issues promptly, rather than delaying until formal reviews. • Encouraging Ownership and Inquiry: Encouraging leaders to ask “Why” questions to deepen understanding and to let team members solve their own problems to foster responsibility. • Cultivating a Feedback Culture: Strategies to create an environment where giving and receiving feedback is routine, supporting continuous improvement. • Prioritizing Team Agendas: The significance of addressing team members’ agendas in meetings to ensure alignment and engagement. • Future Planning and Goal Setting: Securing buy-in for individual future plans and setting SMART goals that align with both personal and organizational objectives. Our team-building activity took a delicious turn with a collaborative Italian cooking challenge, which, despite being a bit chaotic, provided a fun and engaging way to apply teamwork and communication skills in a dynamic setting.
