Here's what you need to know from the world of #climate last week! 🌊 Central and Eastern Europe are reeling from devastating torrential rains and flooding. As extreme rainfall events grow more frequent due to climate change, the urgency for significant #climateaction becomes ever clearer. 🇳🇱 In a groundbreaking move, The Hague has become the first city in the world to ban fossil fuel-related advertisements. Let’s hope this bold initiative inspires more cities around the globe to take similar action! 🌏 Recent research highlights a troubling connection between climate change and rising food insecurity in Southeast Asia. In response, many residents are taking matters into their own hands, with 27.1% of survey respondents reporting that they are growing their own food. 📱Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone, boasting a 30% lower carbon footprint achieved by using more low-carbon electricity during manufacturing. Additionally, the new model incorporates over 25% recycled materials, a number that should continue to grow in the years to come.

Here's what you need to know from the world of #climate last week! 🚍 A new startup in California is rolling out an all-electric school bus fleet. The company, Zūm, hopes to electrify 10,000 school buses over the coming years in an effort to slash emissions getting kids to-and-from class. 😱 A new Deloitte report reveals that a whopping 85% of Canadian CEOs are now deeply concerned about climate change, a major leap from last year's 59%. This surge in worry is driving a notable rise in sustainability investments and budget. 🇦🇺 Commonwealth Bank, Australia's largest lender, will cease financing fossil fuel companies that don't meet Paris Agreement climate goals by the end of 2024. This decision marks a significant shift, as CBA will only support clients with a credible emissions reduction plan and a net-zero ambition for 2035. 🥵 Summer 2024 has shattered records, becoming the hottest ever, with average temperatures 0.03°C higher than the previous record set in 2023. With both June and August 2024 reaching unprecedented highs, and no significant cooling in sight, it's almost certain that this year will be the hottest on record.

Here's what happened in the world of climate last week! 🦠 Recent research has led to the creation of a groundbreaking factory in Helsinki that produces natural proteins from fermented bacteria. The article explores the innovative science behind it and how these microbes could play a vital role in addressing the global demand for sustainable proteins. 🔥 A recent study suggests that Canada's 2023 wildfires released more carbon than any country except China, the U.S., and India. The relentless fire season is raising concerns that frequent future fires could reduce the boreal forests' ability to capture carbon, further accelerating climate change. 🚄 The Zemu, North America's first hydrogen-powered zero-emission train, will soon launch in San Bernardino, California, offering a cleaner rail transit option for a region plagued by poor air quality. This $20 million train could be the start of a broader shift towards clean energy rail in the U.S. 🇰🇷 South Korea’s beloved kimchi is feeling the heat as climate change impacts napa cabbage, its main ingredient. With rising temperatures turning cabbage into a mushy mess, there's a real chance that by 2090, the country's famous kimchi might be a thing of the past.

Here's what happened in the world of climate last week (August 26 to 30) 🌎 🪑 Renowned Swedish furniture retailer IKEA is piloting an online second-hand marketplace, allowing customers to buy and sell pre-loved items directly with each other. This initiative supports IKEA's ambitious sustainability goals of cutting emissions by 50% by 2030 and significantly reducing waste. 🌏 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued an urgent warning as Pacific Islands are rapidly becoming threatened due to rising seas. He emphasized that ocean warming, sea level rise, and acidification are devastating the region, which contributes just 0.02% of global emissions. Guterres urged world leaders to increase support for vulnerable nations and take immediate action to limit global warming, stressing that saving the Pacific will protect humanity as a whole. 💪 The SEC's Climate Rule, which has faced a lot of pushback, gained strong support this week from big pension funds, investors, and environmental groups. These supporters argue that the rule helps investors get important information about climate risks and has backing from investors who manage over $2 trillion. 🇪🇺 The EU is being sued by Climate Action Network Europe and the Global Legal Action Network for failing to set ambitious climate targets in sectors responsible for over half of the bloc's greenhouse gas emissions. The NGOs argue that the EU's targets for agriculture, waste, transport, and small industry do not align with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
