Through feminist research & advocacy, we're crafting a more just & caring world.

About us

Ladysmith is an international feminist research consultancy. Policymakers, program designers, and social movements use data to craft the futures they want to see. A smith is a craftsperson. Throughout history, crafting has typically been associated with men’s work (think blacksmith, tinsmith, locksmith, silversmith). At Ladysmith we believe that women and their life experiences are critical to crafting a more just and caring world. Guided by the principle “no research about us, without us,” we help international organizations collect, analyze and take action on gender data. Our Services: 1. Research and data collection. Our team members are experts in mixed-methods, feminist research methodologies. We conduct field research and desk reviews, and use digital technologies to collect gender data in new ways. 2. Strategic advising. We believe that we ‘need everyone on the bus’ to achieve gender equality. For that reason, we work with partners who are new to feminist theories of change, providing thoughtful guidance on how they too can contribute to a more just and caring world. 3. Research communication. Achieving gender equality doesn’t only require data–it also requires political will. We work with partners to communicate gender data to change hearts and minds. This includes editing existing research, and producing briefs and opinion editorials.

It was such an honour to participate in the International Conference on Addressing Technology-Facilitated Violence Against Women last week. Thanks so much to UN Women and specifically the Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality for the invitation and for convening so many rich panels and discussions! 🤓👩🏻💻 Drawing upon a piece of work I co-authoured for UN Women on the state of data collection efforts around TFVAW, I reflected on the range of approaches that are being taken by different stakeholders to generate evidence, and the persistent methodological, ethical, and sociopolitical challenges associated with these efforts. Two big opportunities I flagged for research and advocacy efforts moving forward: 1. Invest in qualitative research approaches: digital (or virtual) ethnographies are uniquely fit-for-purpose for identifying and making sense of how gender-related violence unfolds through digital and technological means and spaces (💫and for identifying entry points for positive change💫). 2. Engage organizations led by YOUNG PEOPLE, not least young feminist organizations, as well as those engaging young men. Young people do *so much* of their engagement and organizing online-- for better and for worse, this is the reality. Conceptualizing of technology and digital tools as "all bad" or "negative" from a gender equality and gender justice perspective is unhelpful. It is essential to not only invite young feminist and other youth organizations to spaces where discussions of methods, approaches, definitions, priorities, etc are being mapped out-- they must be given scope to *influence* research and advocacy agendas. I wish I could have been there in Seoul for the event -- alas, I had to rely on technology! 🫣 #TFVAW #VAWG #GBV #feministresearch #cybersecurity #onlineviolence #techanddigitization #ICT4D

📢 June 19 is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. Despite ongoing efforts, sexual violence in war and conflict continues, most often affecting women and girls. 💔🙏 Today, we remember the victims of those horrific #WarCrimes and stand with the survivors 🌍 Through our new Women Peace and Security Portfolio – Ladysmith researchers are actively working on ending #GBV in conflict. Below, we highlight some examples of their work: ➡️Dr Julia Zulver (Ladysmith’s #WomenPeaceSecurity Portfolio Lead), writes about women’s mobilization for #GenderJustice in high-risk settings, including in contexts of violent conflict. Her prize-winning book “High-Risk Feminism in Colombia: Women's Mobilization in Violent Contexts” is available in English 👉 bit.ly/36wtfGz and Spanish 👉 bit.ly/3BGTNlQ. ➡️Dr Kiran Stallone, a #WomenPeaceSecurity researcher at Ladysmith, wrote about Colombian women survivors of #sexualviolence in conflict. Her study shows how victim-survivors may strategically submit to rape as an act of self-protection, and how this, in turn, has complicated their recognition and access to rights post-conflict. I really enjoyed this piece💡 While it centers on RCTs, it also invites a broader reflection on what counts as "good" or "real" evidence (and who decides?) I used to ask my international development students at UCLA: who benefits from pretending that research, data, and knowledge production are not deeply political (and contested) acts? Reading it also conjured memories about conversations Tara Cookson and I had in the early days of Ladysmith. One conversation I remember in particular was about how we might strategically deploy the language of "data" to frame a feminist research endeavour that was primarily qualitative in nature. WE of course knew that methodologies out of this tradition can generate rich understandings of inequalities and also help chart paths forward! BUT, we also understood how data hierarchies shape certain conditions of possibility in international development (and beyond!)-- including whether a social problem gains widespread visibility and traction, and thus whether resources are mobilized and policies crafted in response. We'll get into this more in our book, 📕Datafying Development: the promises and pitfalls of the gender data revolution📕; but in the meantime, here's a throwback to some of our early reflections on the subject https://lnkd.in/gHSrY5WG #RCTs #randomizedcontroltrials #methods #evidencebasedpolicymaking #genderequality #genderjustice https://lnkd.in/gQcpE4VX

🎉 Happy Feminist Friday! Coming to you this week all the way from Kyrgyzstan, where our researchers Maria Klara Kuss and Lily Breimann teamed up with UNICEF to shine a spotlight on the often invisible care burden carried by women striving to vaccinate their children 🏥 UNICEF Kyrgyzstan organized a workshop bringing together Ministry officials, partners, healthcare workers, feminist researchers, and activists. 🌍 We learned more about global initiatives tackling gender inequalities in child immunization; 💡Insights from a novel study on the challenges mothers face when vaccinating their children were shared; and 💬 We facilitated a lively discussion on better supporting women, engaging men and community leaders. Check out the video reel for more highlights! 🎥 And an enormous thank you to Sheeba Harma, Alinane Kamlongera, Zhypargul Turmamatova, the Zerkalo team, Elnura Kazakbaeva, and the incredible UNICEF Kyrgyzstan team for making this such a fabulous event! 🤓🤩🎉 #FeministFriday #FeministResearch #GenderData #SupportWomen #EngageMen #UNICEF #VaccinateChildren 🌍💕

"Adjusting how as funders we use measurement is key to shifting the unequal power structures on which philanthropy has traditionally been built. At Co-Impact – a global philanthropic collaborative – a foundational principle of our work is understanding that our program partners are best placed to design strategies that will be effective in addressing persistent problems. They are rooted in the context, have decades of experience, understand the political economy, and have deep relationships with key actors who can help drive change. It clearly follows then that if these organizations design and own strategies, they also need to define and own ways to assess impact." - loved this thought piece from the brilliant Varja Lipovsek 💫
