On Mandela Day, 18 July, Redpath demonstrated its commitment to making a positive impact in our communities through two meaningful initiatives. Ten staff members from Redpath’s Head Office in Johannesburg supported the Aruka Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing care, support and resources to vulnerable individuals and children. Our team distributed meals to the underprivileged and spent quality time with the children at the foundation’s crèche, which cares for approximately 80 children, providing them with meals and early education. In addition, Redpath made a monetary contribution to aid the Aruka Foundation's mission of offering essential services to those in need. Simultaneously, staff from Redpath’s Northam Platinum Zondereinde operations visited the Thabang Child and Youth Care Centre in Thabazimbi. This visit is part of Redpath’s ongoing support for Thabang, having contributed to the centre on several occasions over the years. Our team participated in a potjiekos competition hosted by Thabang and sponsored much-needed LED lights for the care centre. Thabang provides residential care, daily meals, academic support and extra-mural activities for children in Thabazimbi and surrounding areas, focusing on their growth and development. Energy Hazards are common in the mining industry, and if not properly recognized or controlled, can have significant impact on health and safety. These events are related to the release of energy in motion, potential (stored), and electrical energy, and can occur unexpectedly, as the worker is unaware that energy has built up or is stored and awaiting release. Earlier this year, our Redpath Thonket team achieved a significant milestone when they completed the surface ventilation raise at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine in Ghana. At a depth of 941 metres and a diameter of 6.5 m, the Kwesi Mensa Ventilation Shaft (KMVS) is the world’s largest raisebore hole. The KMVS provides ventilation to the Kwesi Mensa Shaft infrastructure, a vital part of the Obuasi mine’s redevelopment. This remarkable achievement was completed with Redpath’s very own Redbore 90EX machine, proudly designed and built by our Redpath Raiseboring team in North Bay, Canada. AngloGold Ashanti plc’s Obuasi mine in Ghana made history recently, setting a new world record with the safe completion of the Kwesi Mensa Ventilation Shaft (KMVS). At a depth of 941 metres and a diameter of 6.5m, the KMVS is the world’s largest raisebore hole. The KMVS provides ventilation to the Kwesi Mensa Shaft (KMS) infrastructure, a vital part of the Obuasi mine’s redevelopment. AngloGold Ashanti officially launched the Obuasi Redevelopment Project in January 2019 to enhance mining and processing capacity over a 21-year life through a phased approach. Phases 1 and 2 have been successfully completed, and Phase 3 is ongoing. It involves refurbishing infrastructure to access the high-grade Obuasi Deeps ore zones. Successful completion of the KMVS was made possible through collaboration between AngloGold Ashanti Ghana and Redpath Thonket, a mining contracting and engineering firm. Importantly, the holing record was achieved with an excellent safety record by the raiseboring team, including the main contractor Redpath and local contractors including Mining Tools Ghana, MAC Partners, and MCS Ghana. Zero injuries were recorded.
