Yesterday the crew of KOTUG Canada’s KJ Gardner rescued for a lone seal pup at their home port in Beecher Bay, BC. Abandoned and severely malnourished, the crew had to act quickly, launching a fast rescue craft to retrieve the seal and then transport it to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Center.   Now given the name of Blossom, this adorable pup is under the care of Marine Mammal Specialists! We're wishing her a speedy recovery, which you can follow along with on the VAMMRC website, https://lnkd.in/gfqiuwdY #sealpup #marinerescue #vancouveraquarium #marinemammalrescue

The past few days have been filled with science and discovery! Innu youth participated in hands-on science and research using ROVs, BRUVs, and assisted the dive team with ongoing underwater surveys to build on Innu knowledge of their marine areas. We also paid a visit to the Wunderstrands, an area of great significance to Innu and their cultural history. Check out the full photo gallery here: https://bit.ly/3Wg7oL8 #Expedition #Innu #SOI

We are incredibly proud to congratulate Megan Murphy, Miawpukek Horizon Business Development Manager, on her appointment to the Oceans Advance Inc. Board of Directors.   Oceans Advance Inc. is a real-world ocean technology research lab based out of Newfoundland and Labrador which tests new and developing techniques, technologies and equipment in some of the harshest waters in the world. They connect members with each other and with government partners to identify and promote opportunities, supporting them through activities like learning sessions, training, networking events, and strategic advocacy. Their goal is to support members developing world-class technologies and services on every continent. Megan brings a depth of marine experience to her role which includes serving as Co-Founder and CEO of a scientific research vessel company, and will provide unique insight into a number of developing technologies through the Blue Economy. Celebrated during National Indigenous History Month, National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place annually on June 21st. Horizon Maritime recognizes the culture, traditions, history and resilience of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples across the country.   We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn traditional knowledge and techniques from our joint partners, associates, and seafarers. From coast to coast, our relationships with local indigenous groups have created many unique opportunities within Canada's Blue Economy that benefit Canadians as a whole. "Our company has got a lot of First Nations partnerships, and we have benefitted as a company tremendously by that diversity and inclusion." - Steve Widmeyer   #indigenousday #canada #firstnations #canadafirstnations #indigenoushistorymonth

Horizon Maritime is proud to be able to collaborate with the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation and Nova Scotia Community College - NSCC on a program that is so important to Nova Scotia. Horizon is very familiar with the high calibre programs offered by NSCC in many different career fields because many of our seafarers have benefitted from this education and training through the Marine Programs NSSC offers. Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation and Horizon Maritime value equity, diversity, and inclusion, so to be able to support Mi’kmaw students pursuing health-care careers by educating themselves at NSCC is something we are proud to be a part of. Working together, we have established a renewable bursary (up to three years) with the goal of encouraging more Mi’kmaq learners to pursue careers in healthcare. It is our hope that these students, upon completion of their studies, will return to their communities to apply their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of Mi’kmaq peoples throughout Nova Scotia. The bursary is valued at $3,000 per year and up to five bursaries (one for each Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Territory District) will be awarded annually to Mi’kmaq learners entering select healthcare-related fields of study at NSCC Applications are now open from NSCC, https://lnkd.in/g-MPVn2f #studentgrant #studentbursary #studenthelp #bursary #indigenousyouth

Yesterday our team was fortunate enough to bring home the cup from the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering (CIMarE) Shipbuilders and Marine Engineers Golf Tournament! The tournament is held in support of The Mission to Seafarers and Bonny Lea Farm.   Mission to Seafarers is an international organization which provides support facilities and resources to foreign seafarers visiting or stuck in limbo within Canada. This includes providing clothing for colder weather, fresh food, personal toiletries, and assisting in larger needs such as repatriation and support from the loneliness of being at sea away from family for extended periods.   Bonny Lea Farm offers independent residential living and vocational services to individuals with intellectual disabilities right here in Nova Scotia. Their goal is to help every individual reach their goals and full potential throughout life.   We were delighted to support these amazing causes, and can't wait to make a return to next year's tournament!   #golftournament #marine #marineindustry #shipbuilders
