We had an amazing time at the Indigenous Business Mixer on June 25, 2024. Co-hosted by the IPC and the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, this event celebrated the one-year anniversary of the South Island Indigenous Business Directory: https://lnkd.in/g5pZ9-mm, which has grown from 50 to 100 listings. Held at the beautiful Songhees & Esquimalt Nation's Salish Seaside RV Haven: https://lnkd.in/gK5S6QBt, the event featured delicious catering by Songhees Events & Catering:https://lnkd.in/g-rs8wR, and stunning photography by Yuwii Media: https://lnkd.in/gmk4xfrH Buying goods and services from Indigenous businesses is a meaningful and direct way to contribute to economic reconciliation. The mixer provided a wonderful opportunity to build community among Indigenous entrepreneurs and learn more about how the IPC and the Chamber support Indigenous businesses on the South Island.

The Pacific Northwest to Alaska Green Corridor project is a collaborative partnership between the major cruise lines, homeports, and several ports of call in the Alaska cruise market that explores low and zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission cruising between Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. There's a webinar tomorrow (Thursday June 27) at 10am PST to provide an update on this project. It's not too late to register. Today is the annual #DayoftheSeafarer. At GVHA, we are proud to support the maritime industry and the seafarers who call our port home, even if just for a short visit. This year, as we raise our Pride flags, we also celebrate the diversity and inclusivity within the maritime community. We recognize and honour all seafarers, regardless of their background, gender, or identity. Our port is a place where everyone is welcome, and we stand in solidarity with all who sail the seas. To all seafarers, past and present, we thank you. A few words from the seafarers at GVHA...

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. For GVHA, it's a time to celebrate and honor the Lək̓ʷəŋən People, whose land we are privileged to work, live, and play on. We are proud to work alongside the Xʷsepsəm Nation and Songhees Nation who are founding members of GVHA that help to steer the strategic direction of our organization. We are profoundly grateful to our current Board of Directors Chief Jerome Thomas (Xʷsepsəm Nation) and Nəʔəmtənat Florence Dick (Songhees Nation) who generously share their knowledge and help guide GVHA forward to a place of greater inclusion. Local artists Butch Dick of Songhees Nation and Darlene Gait of Xʷsepsəm Nation led the design of Na’Tsa’maht – the Unity Wall – a Salish phrase meaning, “unity or working together as one.”

As we continue our learning during National Indigenous History Month, GVHA Board and staff joined Cecelia Dick, Songhees Nation member and knowledge keeper, for the Signs of Lekwungen Walking Tour. It was a morning of learning, and we are grateful for our continued partnership with Explore Songhees. GVHA is honoured to work alongside the Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial.

Celebrity Edge’s inaugural season calling into Lək̓ʷəŋən Territory (Victoria) is well underway! On May 23, members from councils for both the Xʷsepsəm Nation and Songhees Nations and several members of the GVHA Leadership Team and Board of Directors were invited aboard the Celebrity Edge to participate in the welcoming ceremony for the vessel, which included a plaque exchange. The inaugural plaque exchange is long-standing maritime tradition across the globe, signifying the ongoing relationship between the ship and the port communities. We look forward to a successful season with many visits from Celebrity Edge.
