About us
The Global Strategy Lab (GSL) is a bi-campus interdisciplinary research lab that brings cutting-edge science and scholarship to bear on how global institutions, instruments and initiatives are designed to better address the most pressing global challenges. In a world where no single set of actors has shown itself capable of addressing today’s multifaceted global health challenges and reforming global institutional architecture requires knowledge, expertise, and evidence about the various technologies of institutional change, the Global Strategy Lab operates to ensure this need is met and opportunities maximized for a healthier, safer, and more equitable future through our research contributions. We advise the world’s governments and public health organizations on how to design laws, policies and institutions that address transnational health threats and make the world a healthier place for everyone. There is a critical need and great opportunity to strengthen global strategies for improved health and well-being worldwide with synthesized evidence, new approaches, and collective action. The Global Strategy Lab responds to capacity limitations by developing new methods for studying global interventions and training the next generation in how to use and/or benefit from them. At the Global Strategy Lab we focus on three thematic research streams: - Global Antimicrobial Resistance - Global Legal Epidemiology - Public Health Institutions Find out more about our research streams here: https://www.globalstrategylab.org/research-programs/

Last week we celebrated the Global Strategy Lab’s 10-year anniversary. Over the past decade, GSL has become one of Canada's leading social science research and policy institutes. This impact has been made possible through partnerships and support of some of the very best colleagues, mentors, funders, staff, and students—some of whom were able to attend the celebration in person. We are forever grateful for their support and contributions. GSL’s Director of Operations, Lathika Laguwaran; York University's President of Research and Innovation, Amir Asif; Dean of the Faculty of Health, Chris Ardern; and GSL’s Public Health Institutions Research Director, Patrick Fafard, opened the event with reflections on GSL’s growth over the years. The event was emceed by GSL’s Director of Operations Demetria Tsoutouras. And of course, the night couldn’t be complete without words from Founder Steven Hoffman, and Director Mathieu JP Poirier, who provided glimpses of some of the exciting work the Global Strategy Lab is currently working on and is planning to undertake in the future. As we look into the next ten years of the Global Strategy Lab, our commitment remains focused on research for better policies and a healthier world for everyone. Dive into a recap, photos, and videos of the celebration here ➡ 📷 https://bit.ly/3UedZV3 #GSL10

Congratulations to Mathieu JP Poirier, on becoming the new Director of the Global Strategy Lab! We are very excited to enter this new chapter with Dr. Poirier, who has been a key part of GSL for 8 years. His leadership at the Lab has driven many of our projects forward, from research on the effectiveness of international treaties to our work on antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) policy, most recently focusing on the development of unifying global goals and the design of a scientific panel on AMR. We’re eager to see how his contributions and leadership will continue to shape our work moving forward and contribute to making the world a healthier place for everyone. Just last week, we celebrated 10 incredible years at GSL. It's amazing to reflect on how far we've come since Founding Director, Steven Hoffman, laid the groundwork for the lab. In this video, our team shares their hopes and visions for the lab's future, and it certainly looks like a bright one ➡️✨🌎 https://bit.ly/3YmsLvg
After 10 years of service, I’m stepping down as the Global Strategy Lab‘s Founding Director and I’m delighted that Dr. Mathieu JP Poirier will be stepping up into this role. I will continue as a GSL Investigator, Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance, and as a Professor and Dahdaleh Distinguished Chair at York University while on secondment in London at Wellcome Trust. GSL was created 10 years ago in 2014 as an intensely interdisciplinary home for bringing cutting-edge scholarship to bear on the design of global health laws, policies and institutions. I think we’ve stayed true to this original intention and have built upon it to become one of Canada’s leading and largest social science research and policy institutes. We’ve led pioneering studies evaluating the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, conducted the world’s first systematic review of international laws’ effects, made the case for using legal tools to address antimicrobial resistance, opened a new field of global legal epidemiology, and undertaken more than 100 other studies on a diverse range of health challenges. We’ve advised national governments around the world, shaped debates on international laws, published authoritative guidance, and convened policy discussions. We experimented with new research/policy interfaces through our AMR Policy Accelerator and were designated as York University’s first WHO Collaborating Centre. But as my time as GSL’s Director ends, I am so delighted that the Director role will be taken up by Mathieu Poirier, who has been with the Lab for almost 8 years, was part of many of our successes over this period, and is now committed to using his incredible passion, creativity and intellect to take the Lab to new heights. A big thanks to the whole GSL Team – past and present – for their dedication to the Lab’s mission and to making a positive difference in the world. I am so lucky to have had this opportunity to lead such a smart, committed and nice group of colleagues, many of whom came together last Thursday in Toronto to celebrate the Lab’s 10 year anniversary (photo attached). 💊 Our #AMRPolicy Accelerator team, Fiona Emdin (Dahdaleh Research Fellow), Clare McGall (Policy Advisor), and Suzanne Naro (Policy Advisor) had a wonderful time attending the 2024 Western Canada One Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference! This conference was a great opportunity for them to meet with people working in #AMR across the sectors. They were able to engage with and learn from stakeholders across the human health sphere including dentists, nurses, pharmacists and doctors, and animal health and environmental experts. 🐷🌿🌎 📌 Some key takeaways from the conference include: 🔵 Engage prescribers and professionals to share best practices to promote antimicrobial stewardship in Canada’s healthcare, veterinary, and environment settings; 🔵 Explore integrating tools and practices into existing health care frameworks to advocate for appropriate antimicrobial use; and 🔵 Reflect on Indigenous knowledge in the development of One Health strategies to mitigate AMR in Canada. I had an opportunity to share key findings and implications from my latest publication in this video. It’s inspiring to see how lessons from the Montreal Protocol—which saved the ozone layer—can help us tackle the global AMR crisis. AMR represents a growing global challenge with high stakes. However, there are even greater opportunities for global cooperation to manage this threat. It’s time to prioritize equity, flexibility, and accountability in AMR governance to protect global health. #GlobalHealth #AMR #GSL
🌍 The Montreal Protocol is celebrated for its success in addressing ozone depletion. But what can it teach us about mitigating antimicrobial resistance (#AMR)? Lead author Tina Nanyangwe-Moyo, PhD, walks us through key findings from our latest BMJ Global Health publication and how these lessons can help tackle AMR. 📖💡 Explore the full study here ➡️ https://bit.ly/4eJeRt3

Although I have lived in Canada for almost two decades, I am thrilled to finally be visiting the beautiful city of Vancouver for the first time this week to attend the 2024 Western Canada One Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference. I am looking forward to the great sessions taking place over the next couple of days; and speaking to all the human and animal health practitioners, researchers, agriculture and government stakeholders, policy- and decision-makers, and industry members working in the field of antimicrobial stewardship! I will also be presenting two amazing projects my colleagues and I have worked on at the Global Strategy Lab. The two projects I will be presenting are: 🔎 💊 The Role of Gender in Antimicrobial Resistance: Gender considerations are central to the #OH approach, as women, men, and gender-diverse populations are differentially affected by (drug-resistant) infections (e.g., differences in vulnerability to disease, exposure, health care access, diagnosis, and treatment). Key evidence and gender-responsive policies and interventions will be discussed. Arne Ruckert Susan Rogers Van Katwyk Zlatina Dobreva Sarah Paulin-Deschenaux 🐷🌿🌎 Best Practices for One Health Governance to Mitigate Antimicrobial Resistance in Pakistan: #OH governance is an essential mechanism for addressing AMR. Therefore, key policy recommendations to strengthen Pakistan’s OH governance structure will be presented based on OH governance best practices. Arne Ruckert Uswa Shafaque If you are attending the conference, please stop by my posters! I’d love to discuss the topics I’m presenting and hear your thoughts!
