Global shipping bottlenecks have pushed up ocean freight rates as detours around Africa reduced shipping capacity from unrest in the Red Sea. Bottlenecks appear to be easing, which suggests freight costs may be heading down over the coming weeks.

I have so much gratitude for the vibrant discussions and connections made at both the Calgary Stampede and around Alberta. It was a jam-packed week filled with meetings, tours, and events, but we also had some time to check out some chuckwagon races and fireworks. The spirit of the Stampede mirrors the passion that drives the agriculture and agri-food industry—a shared commitment to growth and community. From engaging with industry leaders to exploring innovative ideas, it’s clear that our collective efforts are shaping a promising future for agriculture. Here are some photos that capture a few of the week’s highlights!

This week in our Summer Student Spotlight, we meet Taylor Benoit. She’s pursuing a Crop Technology Diploma at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta. Originally from Girouxville, AB, Taylor is currently working at the FCC office in Falher, serving the Peace Country District. Taylor’s journey to FCC was driven by a desire to explore new facets of the agriculture industry beyond the crop inputs side, which Taylor is already familiar with. Growing up on a grain farm, Taylor has been involved in agriculture from a young age, assisting with farm operations and planning to take on a more significant role in the future. This summer, Taylor’s engagement with the ag community has included visits to various farms. During one memorable visit she got to witness cattle branding, a process new to Taylor, and she appreciated the warm welcome she received from her hosts. Taylor says her time at FCC has been a positive and educational experience so far, and she’s excited about what the rest of the summer will bring.
