  • Joint Statement on the New CHRC Chief Commissioner by Human Rights Groups On June 14th, the Governor General of Canada appointed Birju Dattani as the new Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC). Recent allegations against him have led to calls for his resignation by the Block Québécois, the Conservative Party of Canada, and the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs. The attempts to have Mr. Dattani – the first Muslim and racialized person appointed to this position – vacate his position without due process is deeply concerning. While the allegations against Mr. Dattani are concerning, this campaign against him highlights the heightened level of scrutiny he, like many Canadians, faces because of his faith and ethnic background. Mr. Dattani has responded comprehensively to the media about allegations related to his academic activities as a student 12 years ago. In the face of these allegations, he has also received an endorsement from his previous employer, the Yukon Human Rights Commission, underscoring his qualifications and lifelong dedication to advancing human rights, as well as his “unquestionable impartiality.” Read the full press release on our website: https://lnkd.in/gcFbYq6k

  • In a landmark decision, the international body that hands out human rights accreditations has concluded that there is enough basis to review Canada’s “A” status –  an unprecedented move that puts it among the ranks of countries like Russia, Iraq, and Venezuela. https://lnkd.in/gicqnzv8 The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) — a United Nations body — has launched a “Special Review” of the accreditation of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC). This comes as the result of a complaint by a coalition of Canadian human rights organizations, which submitted federal findings of anti-Black discrimination at the Canadian Human Rights Commission as evidence. If the international body finds there are grounds to downgrade the CHRC to “B” status, for the first time ever, Canada will no longer have independent participation rights at the UN Human Rights Council, its subsidiary bodies and some General Assembly bodies and mechanisms. Further, it will lose the right to vote and hold governance positions at GANHRI. The coalition of Canadian human rights groups, led by the Black Class Action Secretariat, are calling for: JUSTICE: The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Arif Virani to begin the process to create a properly funded direct-access model to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (removing CHRC’s role as a gatekeeper with the power to dismiss claims before they reach the Tribunal) RECOGNITION: The Canadian government must expedite the long-awaited Employment Equity Act amendments to include Black Canadians as an employment equity group. DEVELOPMENT: For the federal government to appoint a Black Equity Commissioner as an independent officer of Parliament to oversee and ensure equity across all levels of government and public service. MEDIA CONTACT: Ginella Massa, Massa Media & Comms - 647-309-6269 | [email protected] BACKGROUND INFO: On Feb 26, 2024, a coalition of human rights organizations submitted a complaint to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The coalition consists of: The Black Class Action Secretariat (BCAS , (PSAC) Public Service Alliance of Canada, National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), Canadian Black Nurses Alliance (CBNA), The Enchanté Network / Le réseau Enchanté , Red Coalition Inc. , Federation of Black Canadians, 613-819 Black Hub, the Black Canadians Civil Society Coalition (BCCSC), and the Black Canadians Civil Society Coalition (BCCSC), ACEP-CAPE

IN HISTORIC DECISION, CANADA TO HAVE HUMAN RIGHTS ACCREDITATION REVIEWED BY INTERNATIONAL BODY OVER ANTI-BLACK DISCRIMINATION ——— In a landmark decision, the international body that hands out human rights accreditations has concluded that there is enough basis to review Canada’s “A” status – an unprecedented move that puts it among the ranks of countries like Russia, Iraq, and Venezuela. This decision came about our intervention led by BCAS based on the findings by the Senate of Canada | Sénat du Canada Human Rights Committee and the Treasury Board Secretariat | Secrétariat du Conseil du Trésor Secretariat | which highlighted systemic racial discrimination within the Canadian Human Rights Commission The UN has never investigated Canada's human rights record in its more than 30 years as a member state. Here is the direct published statement released by GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions) Click to read 👉🏾 https:///nkd.in/drBuSpEB We welcome the recently released Government of Canada Anti Racism Strategy [ https://lnkd.in/eE78BwCv ], and we call on them to implement tangible and measurable policy recommendations, to meet their legal and human rights obligation under the Paris Principles, including our Charter of Rights and Freedom: #JUSTICE: The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Arif Virani should begin the process of creating a properly funded direct-access model to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (removing CHRC's role as a gatekeeper with the power to dismiss claims before they reach the Tribunal); #RECOGNITION: The Canadian government must expedite the long-awaited Employment Equity Act amendments to include Black Canadians as an employment equity group. #DEVELOPMENT: The federal government to appoint a Black Equity Commissioner as an independent officer of Parliament to oversee and ensure equity across all levels of government and public service. #antiblackracism #humanrights #CHRC #Coalition #appeal #CBNA
