Yesterday, we toured our members and the broader community throughout the south side of the Edmonton Metro Region, focusing specifically on the impact and importance of industrial and non-residential developments and the opportunities ahead. Our Field Trips initiative, sponsored by B&A, takes learning out into the community. Co-hosted by Gregg Maimann (CBRE) and Malcolm Bruce MSM, ICD.D (Edmonton Global), we learned more about how these developments can attract jobs and supercharge the need for residential and places for people to live. Mayor Tanni Doblanko highlighted how investors make decisions baed on time, transportation, and taxes. She said Leduc County approved their lot grading plan within 6 days versus 6 months in Toronto. Carolina Calderon from Prairies Economic Development Canada I Développement économique Canada pour les Prairies talked about the strategic investments they have made to incubate private sector investments, noting the Nisku Spine Road, Edmonton International Airport (YEG), and Leduc Business Resource Centre. Dennis Peck toured us through the City of Leduc Business Park, sharing insights on policies and processes that have solidified investment decisions. He proudly stated that their municipality can often approve development permits within one day. Dennis said economic competitiveness is driven by several factors — availability of land, taxation, and land use policy. Kelso Brennan, MBA, PMP® of Hi Signs pointed out all of the wayfinding signage and industrial signage his company has been part of. Of particular note — they installed the largest Amazon swoosh in Canada. Ellie Scott and Cyril Harry from Edmonton International Airport (YEG) shared their “Airport City” vision — how they are creating spaces for employees, visitors, and travellers, and leveraging transportation as a means of economic development. Within their 7,000 acres of land, about 3,500 are open for development. Did you know that the airport generates 3.2 billion of economic output? Thanks to our Field Trip presenting sponsor, B&A, and our event sponsor, FortisAlberta.

Our economy is more diversified than ever, and that will lead to more opportunity and prosperity for all Albertans. My good friend RJ Sigurdson is leading the charge in agriculture, with McCain Foods, The Little Potato Company LtdAlberta Milk GoodLeaf Farms, NewCold, and more expanding in our agricultural sector, we are seeing more investment and growth than ever before. We're seeing new aviation growth with De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited, Wyvern, and others all growing in the space, with more to come with investments from NATO and their NATO DIANA test site. Technology continues to boom, and as my colleague Nate Glubish says, technology is the future of every industry. We're particularly seeing growth in financial technology, with Neo Financial, Helcim, Symend and more reaching new heights in Calgary, but also in the AI space with Attabotics and others. Alberta continues to be a global leader in the energy transition, and my colleagues Brian Jean and Rebecca Schulz doing everything they can to tell our story around the world. As Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) does their work, and we see major investments from companies like Shell, Dow, Air Products, ATCO and more in new technology we will only continue to lead the way. ICYMI: The Edmonton Region is ready to become a leader in semiconductor manufacturing! 🇨🇦 The global #semiconductor (or #chip) shortage highlighted the importance of the industry — and the importance of keeping the supply chain uninterrupted. Our region boasts a strong tech sector, a skilled workforce, and the nanoFAB facility — a hub for semiconductor development and manufacturing. With government support, the Edmonton Region could become a major player in this critical field. 🚀 “Having the homegrown manufacturing capabilities for these high technology components [like chips] is critically important,” Eric Flaim, director of nanoFAB at the University of Alberta, said. “Making an investment into [semiconductor production] locally, can put you on the map globally, as a place where this kind of work can be done.” To read more about the Edmonton Region’s potential in semiconductor manufacturing, click here: https://ow.ly/myzS50StZoA Nate Glubish Matthew O'Connell Christina Bilyk Kris Barker Paul Bakhmut TransEON Inc.
